Archibald S. Currie
Archibald S. Currie (February 25, 1853 – May 16, 1930) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Simcoe West in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1894 to 1898 as a Liberal-Patrons of Industry member. He was born in Mariposa Township, Victoria County, Canada West on February 25, 1853, the son of Scottish immigrants. In 1857, he moved with his parents to Nottawasaga Township in Simcoe County where they settled on Lot 12, Con 4, just north of Creemore. In 1882, he married Annie Macham and they had three children. When Annie died suddenly in 1886, Currie sold the farm and moved to 3 Nelson Street in Creemore. He carried on an insurance business in Creemore. He served on the township council. James Stoddart Duff
James Stoddart Duff (June 20, 1856 – November 17, 1916) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Simcoe West in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, Conservative member from 1898 to 1916. He was born near Cookstown, Ontario, Cookstown, Canada East, the son of John Duff, an Ireland, Irish immigrant, and Eliza Jane Stoddart. Duff was educated at Collingwood College. He married Jane Bell Stoddard. He served on the municipal council for Essa, Ontario, Essa Township. Duff ran unsuccessfully against Archibald S. Patrons Of Industry
The Patrons of Industry in Canada were based on the Patrons of Industry of Michigan that had formed in 1889. It was dedicated to upholding and encouraging the moral, social, intellectual, political and financial situation of farmers and to preserve the way of life that existed in farming communities in the late nineteenth century against encroaching industrialization. It cooperated with the urban labour movement to address the political frustrations of both groups with big business. The Patrons' first appearance in Canada was The Grand Association of the Patrons of Industry in Ontario, founded in 1890. It declared itself independent of the U.S. group in 1891. Although centred in Ontario, the organization branched out into Manitoba (see Patrons of Industry in Manitoba), Alberta, Quebec and the Maritime provinces. The Township of Mariposa was a municipality located in the southwest corner of the former Victoria County, now the city of Kawartha Lakes, in the Canadian province of Ontario.
