Antonín Mánes
Antonín Mánes (3 November 1784 – 23 July 1843) was a Czech painter and draftsman. Life Mánes was born and died in Prague, which was part of the Austrian Empire when he died. He was the son of a miller and was self-taught because his family could not afford to send him to art school. For a time, he earned some extra money working as a painter in a porcelain factory. It wasn't until 1806 that he was able to attend the Academy of Fine Arts, where he was heavily influenced by his teacher, Karel Postl. In 1836, he became a Professor of landscape painting at the Academy. Among his best-known students were Eduard Herold and Johann Kautsky. He eventually went from painting idealized landscapes to a more romanticized approach and was very fond of the Old Masters. The Academy of Fine Arts, Prague ( cs, Akademie výtvarných umění v Praze; AVU) is an art college in Prague, Czech Republic. Founded in 1799, it is the oldest art college in the country. The school offers twelve master's degree programs and one doctoral program. History Starting in the early 18th century a series of organizations were formed in Prague with an interest in promoting art and education. Thanks in part to their efforts, the Academy of Fine Arts was founded by Imperial Decree on September 10, 1799. It began with instruction in drawing. Karl Postl (painter)
Karl Postl (1769–1818) was an Austrian painter who had a career in Prague during the early 19th century. An instructor at the Prague Academy, he also served as a scene painter for the Estates Theatre. Most of his work was in the field of graphic design, but a few paintings by his hand exist; some are in the collection of the National Gallery in Prague. Antonín Mánes was his main pupil. Life Karl was born into a count's family, Paar in Bechyni. He studied painting and graphic design at the Academy in Vienna. From the late 18th century, he set up a studio in Prague. He was promoted as the first director of drawing at the Academy by Czech patrons, but preference was given to Josef Bergler. From 1806 to 1817, that is, until his untimely death, he taught landscape painting and graphic vista at the Academy in Prague. Eduard Herold
Jan Eduard Herold (16 September 1820, Prague – 5 August 1895, Prague) was a Czech painter, illustrator, art critic and writer. Biography He was the eldest of three children born to Johann Christian Herold (?-1837), an impoverished actor in the German-language theater, and his partner, the actress Terezia Ringelmann. He initially studied at a piarist school, but did poorly, so he was apptenticed to a glovemaker, but did no better; being more interested in puppetry. In 1836, he was able to pass the entrance exam for the painting school at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with František Tkadlík, Christian Ruben and Antonín Mánes, who influenced him the most. Johann Kautsky
Johann Baptist Wenzel Kautsky (or Jan Václav Kautský; 14 September 1827, Prague – 4 September 1896, Sankt Gilgen) was a Czech scenic designer, landscape painter and co-owner of "Brioschi, Burghart und Kautsky", a stage decorating company in Vienna. Life He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, from 1844 to 1850 with Christian Ruben (figurative painting) and Max Haushofer (landscape painting). In 1850, he went to Düsseldorf to continue his studies with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. The following year, he began work in Prague as a theater decorator. In 1854, he married the actress and writer Minna Jaich, daughter of the scenic designer Anton Jaich. They had a daughter and three sons, one of whom was the Marxist theoretician Karl Kautsky. In art history, "Old Master" (or "old master")Old Masters Department Christies.com. refers to any painting, painter of skill who worked in Europe before about 1800, or a painting by such an artist. An "old master print" is an original printmaking, print (for example an engraving or etching) made by an artist in the same period. The term "old master drawing" is used in the same way. Josef Mánes (12 May 1820, Prague – 9 December 1871, Prague) was a Czech painter. Life He came from a family of painters, which included his father Antonín, his uncle and Director of the Prague Art Academy Václav, his brother Quido and his sister Amalie. His first painting lessons naturally came from his father. From 1835 to 1844, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, under Professors František Tkadlík and Christian Ruben. He continued his studies in Munich for two years. Upon his return, an affair with the family's maid had unpleasant results and created an estrangement with some members of his family that left him in a state of severe depression. He found refuge in the patronage of Count Bedřich Silva-Tarouca , living and working at his castle in Průhonice for twenty years. Quido Mánes
Quido Mánes (17 July 1828, Prague - 5 August 1880, Prague) was a Czech painter who specialized in genre scenes. Life and work He came from a family of artists that included his father Antonín, uncle Vaclav, brother Josef and sister Amalie. From 1838 to 1851 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague. His career was interrupted for several years after 1866 by Josef's severe illness. In 1871, following his brother's death, he refreshed his skills by taking further lessons from Benjamin Vautier at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He was best known for his scenes of everyday bourgeois life in Prague and folk scenes from Chodenland in southwest Bohemia. His portraits of children were especially popular. Amalie Mánesová (21 January 1817, Prague - 4 July 1883, Prague) was a Czech landscape painter. Biography She came from an artistic family. Her father, Antonín Mánes, brothers Josef Mánes, Josef and Quido Mánes, Quido, and uncle Václav Mánes, Václav were all painters.
