Amir Eshel
Amir Eshel ( he, אמיר אשל; born 1959) is a former Israeli general who served as commander of the Israeli Air Force and currently serves as Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Defense. Biography Amir Eshel was born in Jaffa. His father Yehezekel (Hezi) Eshel (originally Batat), was born in Iraq and immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1936. He fought in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War in the Givati Brigade. His mother Edna was a Holocaust survivor from Russia. Eshel is married and a father of three. He holds a degree in economics from Auburn University at Montgomery, Alabama, and a degree in political science from the University of Haifa’s National Security Studies Center. Air force career Eshel was drafted into the IDF in 1977. After graduating from the IAF Flight Academy as a fighter pilot in 1979, Eshel flew the A-4 Skyhawk, first out of Etzion and then from Ramon. Planning Directorate
The Planning Directorate was the central body in the Israel Defense Forces' General Staff whose focus was on the strategic and tactical planning, the building of military forces, and military organization of the armed forces. It also served as a planning body for the Ministry of Defense, representing the IDF in various related fields to the Minister of Defense. Givati Brigade
The 84th "Givati" Brigade ( he, חֲטִיבַת גִּבְעָתִי, , "Hill Brigade" or "Highland Brigade") is an Israel Defense Forces infantry brigade. Until 2005, the Brigade used to be stationed within the Gaza Strip and primarily performs counter-terrorism operations. Givati soldiers are designated by purple berets. Hezi Eshel
Yechezkel (Hezi) Eshel (January 4, 1931 - November 28, 2016) was a lieutenant colonel in the Israel Defense Forces who served in command duties in the Givati and Golani brigades, as well as in administrative duties in the IDF headquarters ("Matkal"). Biography Eshel was born Yechezkel Batat in Baghdad, Iraq. He immigrated with his family to Israel in 1936. Military career At age 16 he joined the Suburban Hish, where he was sent to man defence posts in Tel Aviv and Hartuv. Following the November 1947 UN Partition Resolution, when he was still under 17 years of age, he joined the Haganah, and was assigned to the Givati (1948) brigade, at the very day that it was established.
