Americans in Qatar are a large immigrant community who numbered around 3,800 in the year 1999. In recent years, this figure has more than doubled and various estimates now put the number of Americans in Qatar to be up to 15,000. Most Americans within the country tend to be based in the capital city of Doha and are largely attracted by the tax-free inducement of the Persian Gulf state. American expatriates run a number of community organisations, meetups and get-togethers. There are also many American schools throughout Qatar, often consisting of U.S. teachers and students. Doha
Doha ( ar, الدوحة, ad-Dawḥa or ''ad-Dōḥa'') is the capital city and main financial hub of Qatar. Located on the Persian Gulf coast in the east of the country, north of Al Wakrah and south of Al Khor, it is home to most of the country's population. The American School of Doha (ASD) is located in Doha, Qatar. The school was founded in 1988 by United States Ambassador Joseph Ghougassian to serve the needs of the American community in Qatar. Sponsored by the US Embassy, it operated until 1997 as the American International School (AIS). There are about 2250 students, with approximately 650 in the high school and 1500 in upper elementary.
