Ali Ahmed Karti ( ar, علي أحمد كرتي; born 27 October 1953) is a Sudanese politician. Karti served as Foreign Minister of Sudan from 2010 to 2015. Karti studied law at the University of Khartoum. Karti served as a commander of the Popular Defence Forces The Popular Defense Forces (PDF, ar, قوات الدفاع الشعبي) was a paramilitary force established under the Popular Defense Forces Act of 1989, it was also part of the Sudanese Armed Forces before its dissolution in 2019 following the ... in the 1990s. Karti is also a prominent Sudanese businessman, and previously bought the Friendship Hotel in Khartoum for $85 million. ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ( ar, عَلِيّ بْن أَبِي طَالِب; 600 – 661 CE) was the last of four Rightly Guided Caliphs to rule Islam (r. 656 – 661) immediately after the death of Muhammad, and he was the first Shia Imam. The issue of his succession caused a major rift between Muslims and divided them into Shia and Sunni groups. Ali was assassinated in the Grand Mosque of Kufa in 661 by the forces of Mu'awiya, who went on to found the Umayyad Caliphate. The Imam Ali Shrine and the city of Najaf were built around Ali's tomb and it is visited yearly by millions of devotees. Ali was a cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad, raised by him from the age of 5, and accepted his claim of divine revelation by age 11, being among the first to do so. The University of Khartoum (U of K) ( ar, جامعة الخرطوم) is a public university located in Khartoum, Sudan. It is the largest and oldest university in Sudan. UofK was founded as Gordon Memorial College in 1902 and established in 1956 when Sudan gained independence. Popular Defence Forces
The Popular Defense Forces (PDF, ar, قوات الدفاع الشعبي) was a paramilitary force established under the Popular Defense Forces Act of 1989, it was also part of the Sudanese Armed Forces before its dissolution in 2019 following the overthrow of Omar al-Bashir. The force had close links with the National Islamic Front associated with former president Omar al-Bashir, and was originally formed as a dedicated Islamist militia. In 2015, the PDF largely operated as a reserve force for the Sudanese Armed Forces. Upon its foundation in 1989, several tribal militias throughout Sudan were integrated into the PDF, including the Messiria tribe's ''murahiliin'', the Rizeigat tribe's ''fursan'', and the Fertit Army of Peace. In 2004, the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress estimated that the Popular Defence Forces consisted of 10,000 active members, with 85,000 reserves. The 1989 Sudanese coup d'état was a military coup that occurred in Sudan on 30 June 1989 against the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and President Ahmed al-Mirghani. The coup was led by military officer Omar al-Bashir who took power in its aftermath and would go on to rule the country for the next 30 years until he was overthrown in 2019. History Background In 1983, a civil war broke out between Sudan's central government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army, and it was fought at great cost to the country's civilian population. Deng Alor Kuol ( ar, دينق ألور) is a South Sudanese politician. Currently the minister of East African Community Affairs in President Salva Kiir's government, he is a member of the Ngok Dinka ethnic group, and was born in Abyei region, an oil-producing border region between Northern and Southern Sudan. More than 99% of Abyei's Ngok Dinka voted to be united with their fellow Dinka in neighbouring South Sudan. In October 2007, Alor was appointed Foreign Minister of Sudan, replacing fellow Southern Sudanese politician Lam Akol, in what was seen as an attempt to appease the Sudanese People's Liberation Movement. Ibrahim Ghandour
Ibrahim Ghandour ( ar, إبراهيم غندور; born 6 December 1952) was the Foreign Minister of Sudan from 9 June 2015 to 19 April 2018 and the former head of the ruling National Congress Party. Ghandour, whose background is in academia as opposed to the military, was chosen as part of an attempt by the Sudanese government to boost ties with the United States. Ghandour is a former presidential assistant, and also previously worked as a consultant with the World Health Organization. Ghandour was imprisoned in 2020 after Omar Bashir's ouster. He was released from prison after the October 2021 Sudanese coup d'état but was imprisoned again the following day.
