Algoma East
Algoma East was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1904 to 1968. It was created in 1903 from parts of Algoma riding. It initially consisted of the territorial district of Manitoulin and the part of the territorial district of Algoma lying east of a line drawn from south to north along the limit between the townships of Lefroy and Plummer Additional and due north to the northern limit of Algoma. In 1904, the territorial district of Manitoulin was transferred out of the riding. In 1914, it was redefined to consist of the eastern part of the territorial district of Algoma, excluding those parts included in Timiskaming, the western part of the territorial district of Sudbury, and the territorial district of Manitoulin In 1933, it was redefined to consist of the territorial district of Manitoulin, and the parts of the territorial districts of Algoma and Sudbury. George Nicholson (politician)
George Brecken Nicholson (17 March 1868 – 1 January 1935) was a Canadian businessman and politician. Nicholson served as a Conservative and Unionist member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Crapaud, Prince Edward Island and became a lumber merchant. Nicholson attended public and grammar schools at Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. In 1884, he joined the Canadian Pacific Railway for construction work, remaining in that job until 1901. Nicholson was established in northern Ontario by the end of the 19th century. In business, he was part of the lumber firm Austin and Nicholson and became president and secretary-treasurer of the McNaught Lumber company. Nicholson was also a director of the Excelsior Life Insurance company. Prince Albert (electoral District)
Prince Albert is a federal electoral district in Saskatchewan, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1908 to 1988, and since 1997. It is one of two districts which has been represented by two different Prime Ministers: William Lyon Mackenzie King from 1926 to 1945, and John Diefenbaker from 1953 to 1979; the district of Quebec East was the other. It is also the only district where two future Prime Ministers competed against each other – King against Diefenbaker, in the 1926 election. Geography This riding is found in the central part of the province, in the transitional area between the Aspen parkland and boreal forest biomes. Thomas Farquhar
Thomas Farquhar (January 28, 1875 – December 24, 1962) was a Canadian politician and businessman from northern Ontario. Farquhar served in municipal politics in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario becoming the city’s seventh mayor from 1920 to 1922. He represented Manitoulin in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1926 to 1929 and represented the federal riding of Algoma East in the House of Commons from 1943 to 1948. In 1948, Farquhar accepted an appointment to the Senate. The subsequent by-election allowed Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King’s Minister of External Affairs, and future Prime Minister Lester B. Beniah Bowman
Beniah Bowman (March 14, 1886 – April 13, 1941) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Manitoulin in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from October 24, 1918 to October 18, 1926 and Algoma East in the House of Commons of Canada from 1926 to 1930 as a United Farmers member. Early life He was born in Wilmot Township in Waterloo County, Ontario, and his parents were of United Empire Loyalist stock. He attended schools in Doon and Hespeler. In 1908, he went to Owen Sound for a year to serve as an assistant to a Mennonite minister, and then went to Hespeler to preach. William Ross Smyth
William Ross Smyth (January 3, 1857 – September 7, 1932) was an Ontario merchant and political figure. He represented Algoma in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1902 to 1908 and Algoma East in the House of Commons of Canada from 1908 to 1917 as a Conservative member. He was born in Thomroam Tarves, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the son of Francis Smyth. In 1879, he married Nancy Burden. Smyth was a lumber merchant. He was also president of the Nancy Helen Mine. Albert Dyment
Albert Edward Dyment (February 23, 1869 – May 12, 1944) was a Canadian politician and businessman. Born at Lynden, County of Wentworth, Ontario, the son of Nathaniel Dyment, of English descent, and Annie McRae, of Scottish origin, he was educated at Barrie Collegiate Institute and at Upper Canada College.
