Alessandro Tremignon
Alessandro Tremignón (or Tremignàn, Tremiglióne; 1635–1711) was an Italian architect from Padua. Work Tremignon was active in Venice. He was influenced by Baldassare Longhèna. Tremignon adapted the High Baroque structural style of Longhena into a typically Late Baroque style with pictorial effects exemplified by the facade of the San Moisè church. His most famous work is the facade of the San Moisè with its exuberant sculptural decorations. The name of the church of San Moisè (Saint Moses) treats the old-Testament figure of Moses as a saint in the Byzantine manner. It also honors Moisè Venier, who paid for restoration of the church in the tenth century. The facade was designed by Tremignon and mostly sculpted by Heinrich Meyring (Arrigo Meréngo), one of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's pupils. It features grotesque carvings of camels above the main entrance. The Venetian Arsenal ( it, Arsenale di Venezia) is a complex of former shipyards and armories clustered together in the city of Venice in northern Italy. Owned by the state, the Arsenal was responsible for the bulk of the Venetian republic's naval power from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period. Chioggia Cathedral ( it, Duomo di Chioggia, ''Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta'') is the main place of worship in Chioggia, Italy, in the south of the Venetian Lagoon. It dates from 1627. The interior contains many interesting works of art. History The Cathedral of Chioggia, dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, was built on the site of an ancient church dedicated to Mary that probably dated to the 8th century, and is mentioned around 1000 AD. Around that time the people of Chioggia began building a splendid new cathedral. This had a "Ravenna" style basilical layout, with a long nave and two aisles, with a semi-circular apse at the east end. It was long, and wide at the transepts. Palazzo Labia
Palazzo Labia is a baroque palace in Venice, Italy. Built in the 17th–18th century, it is one of the last great palazzi of Venice. Little known outside of Italy, it is most notable for the remarkable frescoed ballroom painted 1746–47 by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, with decorative works in ''trompe-l'œil'' by Gerolamo Mengozzi-Colonna. In a city often likened to a cardboard film set, the Palazzo is unusual by having not only a formal front along the Grand Canal, but also a visible and formal facade at its rear, and decorated side as well, along the Cannaregio Canal. In Venice, such design is very rare. The palazzo was designed by the architect Andrea Cominelli (by Alessandro Tremignon according to others). Andrea Cominelli
Andrea Cominelli was an Italian stonemason, sculptor and architect, who was active in the Republic of Venice during the second half of the 17th century. Early years Little is known of Cominelli's youth. He was probably born in Venice in the first half of the 17th century into a family from Bergamo. In 1652 Francesco and Tommaso Morosini commissioned Cominelli to restore the facade of the Church of San Clemente on the Isola di San Clemente. He included busts of Morosini family members above the portal, and their coat of arms. He also added statues of Saint Benedict and Saint Romuald, and a Madonna and cherub. The facade includes reliefs of scenes from battles commemorating the Morosini's victories in the war against the Turks. Piazza San Marco (; vec, Piasa San Marco), often known in English as St Mark's Square, is the principal public square of Venice, Italy, where it is generally known just as ''la Piazza'' ("the Square"). Palazzo Flangini Fini
The Palazzo Ferro Fini is a historical building in Venice, Italy. It was originally two buildings, the Palazzo Morosini Ferro and the Palazzo Flangini Fini, which were combined into one in the 1860s to create the luxury Hotel New York. The hotel was occupied by troops in World War II (1939–45). By 1970 the hotel was in decay, and the building was purchased by the Veneto region, which undertook extensive renovations and made it the seat of the regional council. John Ruskin
John Ruskin (8 February 1819 20 January 1900) was an English writer, philosopher, art critic and polymath of the Victorian era. He wrote on subjects as varied as geology, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany and political economy. Ruskin's writing styles and literary forms were equally varied. Since at least the 18th century (in French and German as well as English), grotesque has come to be used as a general adjective for the strange, mysterious, magnificent, fantastic, hideous, ugly, incongruous, unpleasant, or disgusting, and thus is often used to describe weird shapes and distorted forms such as Halloween masks.
