Albyn Hospital
Albyn Hospital is a private hospital in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is situated on Albyn Place, and is managed by BMI Healthcare. History The buildings in which the hospital is located were built as villas in the 1830s. The St John Nursing Home was established in the buildings by members of the Order of St John in the early 1950s. St John's Spring was moved there from Skene Row at Hardweird in 1955 and the Aberdeen Mountain Rescue Association was established in a garage in the grounds of the buildings in 1964. The hospital was acquired by BMI Healthcare in August 1995. General Healthcare Group PLC (GHG) is a British healthcare company. It owns BMI Healthcare. BMI operates 54 hospitals and clinics in the United Kingdom. History The name "General Healthcare Group" dates to 1993, when AMI, a US for-profit hospital provider which had expanded into the UK in the 1970s, renamed itself BMI Healthcare, creating GHG as its corporate group name. AMI had been floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1988, and was acquired by Generale de Santé (a subsidiary of Compagnie Générale des Eaux) in 1990. In 1997 both Generale de Santé and GHG were acquired by private equity group Cinven, with BMI's international activities transferred to Generale de Santé, leaving BMI Healthcare active only in the UK. The Order of St John, short for Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem (french: l'ordre très vénérable de l'Hôpital de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem) and also known as St John International, is a British royal order of chivalry constituted in 1888 by royal charter from Queen Victoria and dedicated to St John the Baptist. The order traces its origins back to the Knights Hospitaller in the Middle Ages, which was later known as the Order of Malta. It is a Scottish public body, public body which is part of the Scottish National Health Service, created in April 2011.
