Ramon Casas
Ramon Casas i Carbó (; 4 January 1866 – 29 February 1932) was a Catalan artist. Living through a turbulent time in the history of his native Barcelona, he was known as a portraitist, sketching and painting the intellectual, economic, and political elite of Barcelona, Paris, Madrid, and beyond. He was also known for his paintings of crowd scenes ranging from the audience at a bullfight to the assembly for an execution to rioters in the Barcelona streets (El garrot). Also a graphic designer, his posters and postcards helped to define the Catalan art movement known as ''modernisme''. Barcelona and Paris Casas was born in Barcelona. His father had made a fortune in Matanzas, Cuba; his mother was from a well-off Catalan family. In 1877 he abandoned the regular course of schooling to study art in the studio of Joan Vicens. François-Joseph Navez
François-Joseph Navez (16 November 1787 – 12 October 1869) was a Belgian neo-classical painter. Biography Navez was born in Charleroi. He was a pupil of Jacques-Louis David. He spent five years in Italy between 1817 and 1822. Between 1835 and 1862 he was the director of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He was a very successful portrait painter. He also painted many mythological and historic subjects. The orientalist painter Jean-François Portaels was his pupil (and son-in-law). Jean Carolus, the Belgian painter of genre scenes and interiors, was a protege of François-Joseph Navez. Navez was elected a fourth class member of the Royal Institute of the Netherlands in 1826, he became a supernumerary associate in 1841 and resigned in 1851. He died in 1869 in Brussels. Johan Decavele
Johan Decavele (born Tielt, 1943) is a Belgian historian and archivist who worked as head of the Culture Department of the City of Ghent. He has mainly published on the history of Ghent and of the Reformation. He contributed to the ''Algemene Geschiedenis der Nederlanden'', ''Dictionnaire d'histoire et de géographie ecclésiastiques'', ''Monasticon belge'', ''The Golden Delta of the Low Countries'' and ''The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Reformation''. Life Decavele studied history at the University of Leuven and at the Institut für Europäische Geschichte, Abteilung für Abendländische Religionsgeschichte in Mainz with Joseph Lortz, a well-known expert on the history of the Reformation. Louis Gallait
Louis Gallait (9 or 10 May 1810 – 20 November 1887) was a Belgian painter. He lay at the basis of a revival of history painting in Belgium. He earned his reputation especially with the large painting of Charles V's abdication. Gallait's works were esteemed because of their realism, faithfulness of the costumes and color composition of his paintings. He was also a distinguished portrait painter. Biography Gallait was born in Tournai, Hainaut, Belgium in 1810. He first studied in his native town under Philippe Auguste Hennequin. Simon Willem Maris (May 21, 1873 – January 22, 1935) was a Dutch painter best known as a portrait artist. He was the son of Dutch landscape painter Willem Maris of the Hague School. Life and work He was born in The Hague. Simon Maris was a student of his father Willem Maris and subsequently studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Arts of Antwerp.
