Simon Maris
Simon Willem Maris (May 21, 1873 – January 22, 1935) was a Dutch painter best known as a portrait artist. He was the son of Dutch landscape painter Willem Maris of the Hague School. Life and work He was born in The Hague. Simon Maris was a student of his father Willem Maris and subsequently studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Arts of Antwerp. He then spent some time in Brussels and made study trips to Paris and Italy. In 1900 he settled in Amsterdam. In 1903 he traveled with his friend Piet Mondriaan for a few months to Spain. Together with Mondrian and Arnold Marc Gorter he would regularly paint in the following years on the Gein River, where he also drew Mondrian's portrait in 1906. After his marriage to Cornelia den Breejen in 1908, he worked in Zandvoort during the summers. Maris became especially famous as a portrait artist, mostly of worldly women, often commissioned. Realism (art Movement)
Realism was an artistic movement that emerged in France in the 1840s, around the 1848 Revolution. Realists rejected Romanticism, which had dominated French literature and art since the early 19th century. Realism revolted against the exotic subject matter and the exaggerated emotionalism and drama of the Romantic movement. Instead, it sought to portray real and typical contemporary people and situations with truth and accuracy, and not avoiding unpleasant or sordid aspects of life. The movement aimed to focus on unidealized subjects and events that were previously rejected in art work. Realist works depicted people of all classes in situations that arise in ordinary life, and often reflected the changes brought by the Industrial and Commercial Revolutions. Realism was primarily concerned with how things appeared to the eye, rather than containing ideal representations of the world. Gemeentemuseum Den Haag
The Kunstmuseum Den Haag is an art museum in The Hague in the Netherlands, founded in 1866 as the Museum voor Moderne Kunst. Later, until 1998, it was known as Haags Gemeentemuseum, and until the end of September 2019 as Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. It has a collection of around 165,000 works, over many different forms of art. The Drents Museum () is an art and history museum in Assen, Drenthe, in the Netherlands. The museum was opened in 1854. It has a collection of prehistorical artifacts, applied art, and visual art. The museum also has temporary exhibitions. In 2013, it had 227,000 visitors. Isabella, also known as ''Young Woman with a Fan'''','' is a 1906 painting by Simon Maris. It is currently in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Description The artwork measures 41 by 29 cm, and is composed of oil paint on canvas. The portrait shows a twelve-year-old girl known only as Isabella, posing in Maris' studio at 498 Keizersgracht, Amsterdam. She is sitting in a wooden cushioned armchair, with goat heads carved into the armrests. The subject is holding a fan in her right hand, and her left hand is touching the fan's golden tassel. Her left arm is jewelled with a golden bracelet and her ring finger displays a golden ring. She is wearing a "sumptuous" blue and green dress, and a white and red bonnet on her head. In the background, a mirror can be seen baring her reflection, showcasing the rear of the bonnet and dress. Willem Roelofs
Willem Roelofs (10 March 1822 – 12 May 1897) was a Dutch painter, water-colourist, etcher, lithographer and draughtsman. Roelofs was one of the forerunners of the Dutch Revival art, after the Romantic Classicism of the beginning of the 19th century, which led to the formation of The Hague school. His landscapes, especially the early ones with their dominating cloudy skies, demure bodies of water and populated with cattle, are typical for the School of Barbizon. Biography Willem Roelofs was born in Amsterdam on 10 March 1822. When he was a young man his family moved to Utrecht, where his father became an enlisted member of the Painters and Draughtsman Society in Utrecht, and received lessons from the artist Abraham Hendrik Winter. In June 1839, they moved to The Hague so that the young Willem could study in the Academy for Visual Arts in that city and train in the atelier of Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen.
