Patrick Harvey Ashby (October 17, 1890 – January 25, 1985) was a farmer, rancher, father, Hudson's Bay employee, soldier, sniper and Canadian federal politician. He was born in Sussex, England. Ashby joined the Canadian Forces and served overseas in World War I from 1914 to 1918. Ashby first ran for a seat in the House of Commons of Canada as a candidate from the Social Credit candidate in the 1945 federal election. He defeated incumbent Member of Parliament Cora Taylor Casselman. Ashby left the Social Credit Party at the dissolution of Parliament on June 26, 1949. He ran for re-election in the 1949 federal election under the Independent Social Credit banner. Ambrose Holowach
Ambrose Holowach (July 22, 1914 – February 27, 1993) was a Canadian businessman, soldier during World War II, member of the Canadian Parliament and member of the Alberta legislative assembly. Family Ambrose's father, Sam, was an ethnically Ukrainian immigrant from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Same homesteaded east of Edmonton before moving into the city to start a laundry business. Ambrose's brother Walter studied violin in Vienna and played in the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. A horse chestnut tree was planted behind the family business from seed brought from Vienna by Walter. It became a local landmark known as the "Holowach Tree"; saved from redevelopment in 1998, it was still standing . The 1949 Canadian federal election was held June 27, 1949 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 21st Parliament of Canada. The Liberal Party of Canada was re-elected with its fourth consecutive government, winning 191 seats (73 percent of the seats in the House of Commons), with just under 50 percent of the popular vote. It was the Liberals' first election in almost thirty years not under the leadership William Lyon Mackenzie King. King had retired in 1948, and was replaced as Liberal leader and Prime Minister by Louis St. Laurent. It was the first federal election with Newfoundland voting, having joined Canada in March of that year.
