Albemarle Training School
Albemarle Training School was a segregated school for African American students in Albemarle County, Virginia. It was located north of Charlottesville near what is now the Ivy Creek Reservoir. It was built on the site of the Union Ridge Graded School (founded 1885) after that building burned down in 1893. The school served all grades, and is notable for being the first four-year high school for African American students in Albemarle County. In 1951, its students were transferred to the new Burley High School in Charlottesville, and the facility became an elementary school until closing in 1959. Curriculum and student body The school's curriculum changed significantly over time, beginning with practical training in trades and eventually shifting to a more academically oriented high-school curriculum. Albemarle County
Albemarle County is a county located in the Piedmont region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its county seat is Charlottesville, which is an independent city and enclave entirely surrounded by the county. Albemarle County is part of the Charlottesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Charlottesville, colloquially known as C'ville, is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Jackson P. Burley High School was a segregated school for African American students in Charlottesville, Virginia. Located on Rose Hill Drive, it opened in 1951 to serve students from both the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. It graduated its final class of seniors in 1967, and soon after, the City's interest in the school was purchased by Albemarle County, Virginia, Albemarle County. In 1974 it reopened as Albemarle County Public Schools, Jackson P. Burley Middle School. The school was built on a seventeen-acre tract of land purchased from a prominent African American community member, Jackson P. Burley. In November, 2020, the school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Monticello
Monticello ( ) was the primary plantation of Founding Father Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, who began designing Monticello after inheriting land from his father at age 26. Located just outside Charlottesville, Virginia, in the Piedmont region, the plantation was originally , with Jefferson using the labor of enslaved Africans for extensive cultivation of tobacco and mixed crops, later shifting from tobacco cultivation to wheat in response to changing markets.
