Aizupe Manor
Aizupe Manor ( lv, Aizupes muižas pils, german: Gut Ahsuppen) is a manor house built in late classicism style in Vāne Parish, Tukums Municipality, in the Courland region of Latvia. Construction of the manor was completed in 1823. The building housed a forestry school from 1939 to 1985. History On the basis of the Treaty of Vilnius (November 1561), the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia was created from the part of Latvia between the west bank of the Daugava River and the Baltic Sea, specifically for Gotthard Kettler of the House of Kettler. At that time, the estate of Aizupe Manor came under the control of Gotthard Kettler, Duke of Courland and Semigallia, the last master of the Order of the Brothers of the Sword. Vāne Parish ( lv, Vānes pagasts) was an administrative territorial entity of Tukums Municipality in the Courland region of Latvia. It was part of the former Kandava Municipality Kandava Municipality ( lv, Kandavas novads) is a former municipality in Courland, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 1999 by merging Cēre Parish and Kandava town with its countryside territory. Later it absorbed Matkule Parish, Vāne Pa ... from 2009 until 2021. Siege Of Cēsis Castle (1577)
The siege of Cēsis Castle (1577) was a part of Ivan the Terrible, Ivan the Terrible's campaign to conquer Terra Mariana, Old Livonia. After a five-day-long bombardment, about 300 people within the castle committed mass suicide by blowing themselves up with four barrels of gunpowder. The event is regarded as one of the greatest tragedies in the war-torn Europe of the early modern period. Background After the dissolution of the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order in 1561, Cēsis Castle, one of the region's most important fortresses, was garrisoned by Polish troops. In the summer of 1577, the townsmen of Cēsis drove the Polish garrison from the castle and submitted to Magnus, Duke of Holstein, Magnus, the titular King of Livonia. Kandava Municipality ( lv, Kandavas novads) is a former municipality in Courland, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 1999 by merging Cēre Parish and Kandava town with its countryside territory. Peter Ludwig Von Der Pahlen
Peter Ludwig Graf von der Pahlen (russian: Пётр Алексе́евич Па́лен, translit= Pyotr Alekseyevich Palen; , Palms Manor, Palms (now ) – , Mitau (now )), a Baltic-German courtier and general, played a pivotal role in the assassination of Emperor Paul of Russia in 1801. He became a general in the Imperial Russian Army in 1798, a count in 1799, and served as the Military Governor of St. Petersburg from 1798 to 1801. Early career Pahlen stemmed from a family of Baltic nobles. He was born in the manor of Palms, in present-day Haljala Parish, Lääne-Viru County, Estonia. He served in the horse guards and saw service in the Russo-Turkish Wars. He was wounded at Bendery and invested with the Order of St George of the 4th degree. Courland Governorate
The Courland Governorate, also known as the Province of Courland, Governorate of Kurland (german: Kurländisches Gouvernement; russian: Курля́ндская губерния, translit=Kurljándskaja gubernija; lv, Kurzemes guberņa; lt, Kuršo gubernija; et, Kuramaa kubermang) and known from 1795 to 1796 as the Viceroyalty of Courland was one of the Baltic governorates of the Russian Empire, that is now part of the Republic of Latvia. The Koskull family ( lv, Koskuli, russian: Коскуль), also written as Koschkull, is a wealthy aristocratic family of Livonian origins, famous for their extensive lands and manors. The family are descendants of the first King of Livonia and officially established as Koskele in 1302 in Livonia. The family spread to Estonia, Courland and Poland throughout the 15th century, Sweden and Finland in the 17th century, and Prussia and Russia in the 18th century. Several branches of the family still exist today, and is believed to be related to the von der Pahlen family. Peter Von Biron
Peter von Biron (15 February 1724 – 13 January 1800) was the last Duke of Courland and Semigallia, from 1769 to 1795. Life and reign Peter was born in Jelgava (german: Mitau) as the oldest son of Ernst Johann von Biron, future Duke of Courland, and his wife Benigna von Trotha. From 1730 until 1740, he and his family lived in Moscow and St. Petersburg, where his father was a lover and favorite of Anna of Russia. When he was 16 years old, he was forced to follow his family into their exile, first to Tobolsk Governorate in Siberia, then from 1742 until 1762 in Yaroslavl. In 1765, he married Princess Caroline of Waldeck and Pyrmont, but the union produced only one son, who was stillborn in 1766. In 1769, he was given the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia by his father. Tukums Municipality ( lv, Tukuma novads) is a Latvian municipality situated partly in the region of Semigallia, partly in Courland and partly in Vidzeme. Ernst Johann Biron
Ernst Johann von Biron (german: Ernst Johann von Biron; russian: link=no, Эрнст Иоганн Бирон; (german: link=no, Bühren); ) was a Duke of Courland and Semigallia (1737–1740 and 1763–1769) and briefly regent of the Russian Empire in 1740. Early years Biron was born as Ernst Johann von Bühren in Kalnciems, Semigallia as a second son of Karl von Bühren (1653-1733) and his wife Katharina Hedwig von der Raab genannt Thülen (1660-1740). His grandfather Carl von Bühren (died in 1674) had been a groom in the service of Jacob Kettler, Duke of Courland, and had received a small estate from his master, which Biron's father inherited and where Biron himself was born.
