Air Ambulance Northern Ireland
Air Ambulance Northern Ireland (AANI) also known as Air Ambulance NI is a registered charity that operates a helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) dedicated to responding to serious trauma and medical emergencies in Northern Ireland. In August 2016, it was announced by the Northern Ireland government that Air Ambulance NI was partnering with the health service in Northern Ireland to provide the HEMS. The charity works in partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), with AANI providing the aviation side of the service and funding the non-medical costs of HEMS, with NIAS being commissioned to provide the clinical staff, equipment, clinical governance arrangements and operational tasking. The service is based at Maze Long Kesh near Lisburn, where they operate both their primary and back-up aircraft from, having previously operated their back-up aircraft from their secondary base at St Angelo Airport in County Fermanagh. John Hinds (21 March 1980 – 4 July 2015) was a Northern Irish doctor known for his contributions to Prehospital Medicine, prehospital care and high-speed motorcycle trauma medicine. He was a Consultant (medicine), consultant anaesthesiology, anaesthetist and intensive care medicine, intensive care doctor at Craigavon Area Hospital in County Armagh. Early life Hinds was born on 21 March 1980 in Newtownards, Northern Ireland. From the age of seventeen, he was a motorcycle enthusiast. The Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) is a helicopter-based medical evacuation and air ambulance service based in Athlone, Ireland. Operated since 2012 by the Air Corps and National Ambulance Service under the call sign MEDEVAC 112, the service was redesignated AIR CORPS 112 in 2016. The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children is a specialised government children's hospital and medical centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is managed by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and is the only hospital in Northern Ireland dedicated to children. Casualty evacuation, also known as CASEVAC or by the callsign Dustoff or colloquially Dust Off, is a military term for the emergency patient evacuation of casualties from a combat zone. Casevac can be done by both ground and air. "DUSTOFF" is the callsign specific to U.S. Army Air Ambulance units. CASEVACs by air today are almost exclusively done by helicopter, a practice begun on a small scale toward the end of World War II; before that, STOL aircraft, such as the Fieseler Fi 156 or Piper J-3 were used.
