Ahmad Shamsul Islam
Ahmad Shamsul Islam (born August 6, 1924) is a Bangladeshi scientist and educator. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1987 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to education. He is serving as a Professor of the Department of Botany at the University of Dhaka. Education and career Islam earned his bachelor's and bachelor's degrees from Presidency University, Kolkata in 1945 and 1947 respectively. He obtained a Ph.D. from Manchester University, England in 1954. For his postdoctoral research he went on to Cornell University, University of California, Davis, the University of Nottingham and University of Tokyo. Islam joined BRAC University as a consultant in August 2003. He served as the moderator of Global Network of Bangladeshi Biotechnologists (GNOBB). In 2008, he was proposed by Maqsudul Alam to initiate the jute genome sequencing project. Presidency University, Kolkata (formerly known as Presidency College, Kolkata) is a second major public state aided research university located in College Street, Kolkata. Considered as one of best colleges when Presidency College was affiliated to University of Calcutta. Established in 1817, it is the oldest college in India (in Asia as well). Chittagong College is a government college in Chittagong, Bangladesh. It is the second college established in Bangladesh after Dhaka College. It offers higher secondary education (HSC), bachelor's degree and master's degree. History Having begun as Chattogram District school (now Chittagong Collegiate School) in 1836, it became an intermediate college in 2nd January 1869. Zeba Islam Seraj is a Bangladeshi scientist known for her research in developing salt-tolerant rice varieties suitable for growth in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. She is currently a professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka.
