Adrien René Franchet
Adrien René Franchet (21 April 1834 in Pezou – 15 February 1900 in Paris) was a French botanist, based at the Paris Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle. He is noted for his extensive work describing the flora of China and Japan, based on the collections made by French Catholic missionaries in China, Armand David, Pierre Jean Marie Delavay, Paul Guillaume Farges, Jean-André Soulié, and others. He was the taxonomic author of many plants, including a significant number of species from the genera ''Primula'' and ''Rhododendron''. ''Pouteria'' is a genus of flowering trees in the gutta-percha family, Sapotaceae. The genus is widespread throughout the tropical regions of the world. It includes the canistel ('' P. campechiana''), the mamey sapote ('' P. sapota''), and the lucuma ('' P. lucuma''). Commonly, this genus is known as pouteria trees, or in some cases, eggfruits. Background Père Jean Marie Delavay was a missionary sent to China for Missions Etrangères de Paris (Foreign Missions of Paris) on an extended assignment in Yunnan. While in France in 1881, he met Père Armand David, a natural history collector and fellow missionary, and was persuaded to take up David's role of collecting plant specimens in China for the Paris Museum of Natural History. His meticulous methodology led to a prolific collection of plants, which included 200,000 specimens of 4,000 distinct species of flora. As Delavay did not have extensive training on botany, he would collect specimen with even the most minor of differences, which led to the discovery of 1,500 new species of plants within his collections. Ludovic Savatier
Paul Amedée Ludovic Savatier (19 October 1830 – 27 August 1891) was a French naval doctor and botanist. Savatier was born on the Atlantic island of Oléron, off La Rochelle and Rochefort, in 1830. He studied medicine at the Naval Medical School of Rochefort. He subsequently became a high-ranking medical officer in the French Navy. In 1865, as part of a French effort to support the construction of a Japanese Navy, he travelled to Japan, and spent the next decade there, based at Yokosuka. During his tenure there he devoted himself primarily to botany, attempting to impart the Linnean model to Japanese botanical classifications. He collaborated with a large number of other botanists and researchers, including Japanese botanists Keisuke Ito and Yoshio Tanaka, and Frederick Victor Dickins, a fellow naval medical officer (in the British Navy). William Hemsley (botanist)
William Botting Hemsley (29 December 1843, in East Hoathly – 7 October 1924, in Kent) was an English botanist and 1909 Victoria Medal of Honour recipient. He was born in East Hoathly, Sussex and in 1860 started work at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as an Improver, then Assistant for India in the Herbarium, finally Keeper of Herbarium and Library. Henri Ernest Baillon
Henri Ernest Baillon was a French botanist and physician. He was born in Calais on 30 November 1827 and died in Paris on 19 July 1895. Baillon spent his professional life as a professor of natural history, and he published numerous works on botany. He was appointed to the Légion d'honneur in 1867 and joined the Royal Society in 1894. Baillon put together the "Dictionnaire de botanique", for which Auguste Faguet produced the wood engravings.
