Adonidia
''Adonidia'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Arecaceae, native to the Philippines and Borneo. History of the genus The genus was originally described in 1919. In 1957, it was transferred to the genus ''Veitchia''. In 2008, further study returned it to its own genus. Thus, some older photos from the 1957-2008 period use ''Veitchia'' instead of ''Adonidia''. Another similar palm, the genus '' Manjekia maturbongsii'' was first described in 2012 as ''Adonidia maturbongsii'',W.J.Baker & Heatubun, Palms (1999+) 56: 134 (2012). but in 2014 it was moved to its own genus, '' Manjekia''. Current status At present there are two recognized species. The first, and better known, is the Manila palm ('' Adonidia merrillii''), which is native to the Philippines (Palawan and Danjugan Island) and is reportedly naturalized in the West Indies. The second is '' Adonidia dransfieldii'', native to Sabah Sabah () is a state of Malaysia located in northern Borneo, in the region of ...

Adonidia Merrillii
''Adonidia merrillii'', the Manila palm, is a palm tree species native to the Philippines (Palawan and Danjugan Island). This palm was cultivated for centuries in East Asia before becoming a staple in the West. It is reportedly naturalized in the West Indies and Florida. It is commonly known as the "Christmas palm" because its fruits become bright scarlet and tend to be that color in winter. This palm is typically fairly small and slender, normally attaining 25 feet or 8 meters in height Most plants maintain 5-7 fronds when young, gradually building up the crown as the palm ages, and sometimes reaches 10-12 fronds when mature. Uses, cultivation, and care The Adonidia palm, sometimes described as the "mini-royal-palm", adapts well to landscaping and cultivation, as well as growing in pots. It is able to withstand large amounts of rainfall and can tolerate short droughts, though it does not like sea salt. Adonidias prefer full sun but can withstand partial shade. They are not tol ...

Adonidia Dransfieldii
''Adonidia dransfieldii'' is a species of ''Adonidia'' palm native to Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. It grows up to in height. It is very similar in appearance to the much more common ''Adonidia merrillii'' with the chief visual differences being a slightly more golden coloration, more slender trunk, more upright inflorescence, thinner leaves, and less clefted trunks. However, the basic overall appearance is quite similar and, given the relatively short biological distance between Sabah and Palawan Palawan (), officially the Province of Palawan ( cyo, Probinsya i'ang Palawan; tl, Lalawigan ng Palawan), is an archipelagic province of the Philippines that is located in the region of Mimaropa. In the nursery trade and in the United States it may be confusingly referred to as Alexander palm, which is an often-used but misnomered name of another Australian palm species '' Archontophoenix alexandrae'', the Alexandra palm (note the difference in gender between the two names). Description ''Ptychosperma elegans'' is a solitary-stemmed palm growing to a height of . The slender stem measures up to in diameter, is slightly bulging at the base, is light grey in colour, and has prominent leaf scars encircling the trunk. The crown usually has 7 to 11 pinnate fronds that reach lengths of around . The petiole (leaf stem) is around long; the crownshaft around long and mid-green in colour with a whitish waxy coating. Arecaceae Genera
The Arecaceae is a family of perennial flowering plants in the monocot order Arecales. Their growth form can be climbers, shrubs, tree-like and stemless plants, all commonly known as palms. Those having a tree-like form are called palm trees. Currently, 181 genera with around 2,600 species are known, most of which are restricted to tropical and subtropical climates. Most palms are distinguished by their large, compound, evergreen leaves, known as fronds, arranged at the top of an unbranched stem. However, palms exhibit an enormous diversity in physical characteristics and inhabit nearly every type of habitat within their range, from rainforests to deserts. Palms are among the best known and most extensively cultivated plant families. They have been important to humans throughout much of history. Many common products and foods are derived from palms. In contemporary times, palms are also widely used in landscaping. In many historical cultures, because of their importance as ...
