Serviceton Railway Station
Serviceton railway station is located on the Western standard gauge line in Victoria, Australia, in the small town of Serviceton, by rail from Melbourne. Opened in 1889, and closed in 1986, today it is leased to West Wimmera Shire Council for community group use. History The Adelaide-Wolseley line was extended from Bordertown in South Australia on 19 January 1887 coinciding with the opening of the line from Dimboola in Victoria. The Premier of South Australia, John Downer, wrote to his Victorian equivalent, James Service, suggesting that the new border railway town and station be named Downer after him. Service wrote back and said that as it was in Victoria, it would be named Serviceton after himself, although at the time of construction the land was claimed by both colonies. Adelaide Metro
Adelaide Metro is the public transport system of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is an intermodal system offering an integrated network of bus, tram, and train service throughout the metropolitan area. The network has an annual patronage of 79.9 million, of which 51 million journeys are by bus, 15.6 million by train, and 9.4 million by tram. The system has evolved heavily over the past fifteen years, and patronage increased dramatically during the 2014–15 period, a 5.5 percent increase on the 2013 figures due to electrification of frequented lines. Bridgewater Railway Station
Bridgewater railway station was located on the Bridgewater line, serving the Adelaide Hills suburb of Bridgewater. It was located 37.6 km from Adelaide station. History Bridgewater station opened in the 1880s and was the terminus of the now defunct Bridgewater line. The station consisted of three platforms. Platform 1 was a side platform that was 140 metres long, and platforms 2 and 3 were an island platform 170 metres long. On 1 March 1978, the station became the eastern boundary of the State Transport Authority network. The station building on the main platform was burned down by arsonists in 1983. The station closed on 23 September 1987, when the State Transport Authority withdrew services on the route between Belair and Bridgewater. Bridgewater Railway Line
The Bridgewater railway line is a former passenger railway service on the Adelaide to Wolseley line in the Adelaide Hills. It was served by suburban services from Adelaide. On 26 July 1987, the service was curtailed to Belair and renamed Belair railway line. The State Transport Authority (STA) was the government agency which controlled public transport in South Australia between 1974 and 1994. In railway engineering, "gauge" is the transverse distance between the inner surfaces of the heads of two rails, which for the vast majority of railway lines is the number of rails in place. However, it is sometimes necessary for track to carry railway vehicles with wheels matched to two different gauges. Gauge Conversion
Gauge conversion is the changing of one railway track gauge (the distance between the running rails) to another. Sleepers If tracks are converted to a narrower gauge, the existing sleepers (ties) may be used. However, replacement is required if the conversion is to a wider gauge. Some sleepers may be long enough to accommodate the fittings of both existing and alternative gauges.
