Abdur Rais
Abdur Raees (Born: 1 May 1931 – died: 18 December 1988) was a politician of Bangladesh and a member of the East Pakistan Provincial Council and the National Parliament. He was elected a member of parliament from the previous Sylhet-3 (now Sunamganj-3) seat in the 1st parliamentary election of the year 1973. Birth and family life Abdur Rais was born on 1 May 1931, in the village of Bangaon in Patli Union of Jagannathpur, Sunamganj subdivision of the then Bengal Presidency of British India. He was married to Rafiqa Rais Chowdhury. Their children are the 1st District Council Administrator Barrister M. of Sunamganj Enamul Kabir Emon and Azizul Kabir Sahin. Sylhet-3 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2008 by Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Balaganj, Dakshin Surma, and Fenchuganj upazilas. Sunamganj District
Sunamganj ( bn, সুনামগঞ্জ) is a district located in north-eastern Bangladesh within the Sylhet Division. History In the ancient period, Sunamganj was part of the Laur Kingdom. After the conquest of Sylhet (Kingdom of Gauiurh) in 1303 by Muslims under the spiritual guidance of Shah Jalal, Shah Kamal Quhafah established a capital in Shaharpara with the aid of his twelve disciples and his second son, Shah Muazzamuddin Qureshi, who also maintained a second sub-administration office at Nizgaon on the bank of the river Surma, present day Shologhar (there is now Shologhar Masjid and madrasa) in Sunamganj town, which was administered by one of his descendants. East Pakistan
East Pakistan was a Pakistani province established in 1955 by the One Unit Scheme, One Unit Policy, renaming the province as such from East Bengal, which, in modern times, is split between India and Bangladesh. 1973 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in newly independent Bangladesh on 7 March 1973. The result was a victory for the Bangladesh Awami League, who won 293 of the 300 seats, including eleven constituencies where they were elected unopposed without a vote. Voter turnout was 54.9%. Though the Awami League was already the clear favourite before the elections, Sheikh Mujib's government put major effort into winning every seat. This led to a nearly complete obliteration of the opposition, with most of the leadership of opposition parties failing to win seats, including Major Jalil (Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal), Rashed Khan Menon, Kazi Zafar Ahmed and Aleem al-Razee (National Awami Party (Bhashani)), and Suranjit Sengupta (National Awami Party (Muzaffar)). Patli Union Parishad ( bn, পাটলী ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ) is a union parishad under Jagannathpur Upazila of Sunamganj District in the division of Sylhet, Bangladesh. It has an area of 32.52 square kilometres and a population of 21,383.
