Sunamganj-3 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2008 by M. A. Mannan of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Shantiganj and Jagannathpur upazilas. History The constituency was created in 1984 from a Sylhet constituency when the former Sylhet District was split into four districts: Sunamganj, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj. Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury
Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury ( bn, শাহীনুর পাশা চৌধুরী; born 1985) is a Bangladeshi politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Sunamganj-3 constituency during 2005–2006. He was elected a member of parliament for the first time in July 2005 after the death of incumbent Abdus Samad Azad, a Awami League Presidium member. Early life and education Chowdhury was born in 1985 to a Bengali Muslim family in Patli Union, Jagannathpur, Sunamganj District, Bangladesh. He completed a Masters from Hadith studies at the Jamia Qasimul Uloom Madrasa, and then completed a degree at the Murari Chand College. After that, he studied law at the University of Dhaka. Gulzar Ahmed (Sunamganj Politician)
Gulzar Ahmed Chowdhury ( bn, গুলজ়ার আহমদ চৌধুরী; died 26 November 2019) was a politician in the Sunamganj District of the Sylhet Division of Bangladesh. He was elected member of parliament for the Sunamganj-3 constituency as a Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate in the sixth Jatiya Sangsad elections held on 15 February 1996. Early life and education Chowdhury was born in 1937, to a Bengali Muslim family of Chowdhuries in the village of Hatiya in Derai, Sunamganj, then part of the British Raj. After completing his matriculation from Jagannathpur High School in 1956, Chowdhury enrolled at the Sunamganj College. He was later expelled due to political activities against the ruling Muslim League political party. After being released from prison in 1958, Chowdhury completed his Intermediate of Arts and gained admission into Murari Chand College in 1963. Jagannathpur ( bn, জগন্নাথপুর) is an upazila located in the southeast of the district of Sunamganj and in the middle of the division of Sylhet, Bangladesh. It is bordered by Chhatak and Dakshin Sunamganj to the north, Bishwanath and Osmani Nagar to the east, Derai to the west, and Nabiganj to the south. History of Jagannathpur dates back to 12 century. Faruk Rashid Chowdhury is a Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jatiya Party politician from Bangladesh and the former Ministry of Finance (Bangladesh), Minister of Finance. Abdus Samad Azad ( bn, আব্দুস সামাদ আজাদ; 15 January 1922 – 27 April 2005) was a Bangladeshi diplomat and politician. He was elected to Bangladesh's parliament five times from 1970 to 2001. Shantiganj ( bn, শান্তিগঞ্জ, Shantigônj), formerly known as South Sunamganj or Dakshin Sunamganj ( bn, দক্ষিণ সুনামগঞ্জ), is an upazila of the Sunamganj District in Sylhet Division, Bangladesh. Geography Shantiganj is located in between 24°49' and 25°10' north latitudes and in between 91°14' and 91°27' east longitudes. It has a total area of . The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP. General elections were held in Bangladesh on 1 October 2001. The 300 single-seat constituencies of the Jatiya Sangsad were contested by 1,935 candidates representing 54 parties and including 484 independents. 2014 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 5 January 2014, in accordance with the constitutional requirement that elections must take place within the 90-day period before the expiration of the term of the Jatiya Sangshad on 24 January 2014. The elections were not free and fair. They were preceded by a government crackdown on the opposition, with Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Opposition leader Khaleda Zia was put under house arrest. 2008 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League Party, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. The Islami Oikya Jote ( bn, ইসলামী ঐক্য জোট, ''Islami Oikko Joţ'', "Islamic Unity Front") is a political party in Bangladesh and is allied with the Four Party Alliance.
