Sylhet-3 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2008 by Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Balaganj, Dakshin Surma, and Fenchuganj upazilas. History The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973. Ahead of the 2008 general election, the Election Commission redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the 2001 Bangladesh census. The 2008 redistricting altered the boundaries of the constituency. Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury
Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury (3 January 1955 – 11 March 2021) was a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Sylhet-3 constituency for three terms. Early life Chowdhury was born on 3 January 1955 in Nurpur, Fenchuganj to Delwar Hossain Chowdhury and Asiya Khanom Chowdhury. He was the sixth of seven brothers and had four elder sisters.The wider family mostly reside in UK and US. He had an MBA degree, which he obtained from a university in the UK. Career Chowdhury was elected to Parliament from Sylhet-3 on 5 January 2014 as an Awami League candidate. He was a member of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association. Chowdhury also served as the vice-president of the Awami League's Sylhet District Unit. Death After contracting COVID-19, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh, Chowdhury was taken to United Hospital, Dhaka where he died on 11 March 2021. Abdur Raees (Born: 1 May 1931 – died: 18 December 1988) was a politician of Bangladesh and a member of the East Pakistan Provincial Council and the National Parliament. Fenchuganj Upazila
Fenchuganj ( bn, ফেঞ্চুগঞ্জ) is an upazila of Sylhet District in the Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh. Etymology There are many theories behind the naming of the upazila. Some say that Fenchuganj is named after Penchu (or Fenchui) Shah, a guardian of Shah Malum's dargah, who had a habit of sitting at the ghat of the Kushiyara River during the evening every day. One day, he decided to open up a shop in the ghat, which eventually expanded into Fenchuganj or Fenchu's neighbourhood. 2008 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League Party, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair.
