AM (ABC Radio)
''AM'' is an Australian radio program. It is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's flagship current affairs radio program, aired each morning on both the ABC Radio National and ABC Local Radio networks. First broadcast on 4 September 1967, ''AM'' is one of Australia's longest-running radio programs. History 20th century Robert Peach was the first host of ''AM'' when it first aired on the morning of 4 September 1967 on the ABC Radio 1 (metro) and ABC Radio 3 (regional) networks (now ABC Local Radio). The show aired on stations such as 2FC in Sydney, 2NA in Newcastle, 2CN in Canberra and 3AR in Melbourne. In advertisements published in newspapers prior to the first edition of ''AM'' being broadcast, the program was described as: "lively, topical half-hour of reports from home and overseas" with a promise the show would "talk about the kind of things that you talk about - at home, at work, on the train..." Margaret Throsby
Margaret Ellen Throsby AM, (born 1941) is an Australian radio and television broadcaster. She is known for having interviewed thousands of notable people for Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio programs. Early life Margaret Ellen Throsby was born in 1941 in Neutral Bay, a lower north shore suburb of Sydney. Her father was Charles Throsby, an English barrister who died when she was 12, and her mother was Alison Battarbee, a cellist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. She attended North Sydney Girls High School, then spent a year studying speech pathology after leaving school. Career Her association with the ABC began when she joined its announcing staff in 1967. Bob Hawke
Robert James Lee Hawke (9 December 1929 – 16 May 2019) was an Australian politician and trade unionist who served as the 23rd prime minister of Australia from 1983 to 1991. He held office as the Australian Labor Party, leader of the Labor Party (ALP), having previously served as president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions from 1969 to 1980 and president of the Australian Labor Party National Executive, Labor Party national executive from 1973 to 1978. John Pilger
John Richard Pilger (; 9 October 1939 – 30 December 2023) was an Australian journalist, writer, scholar and documentary filmmaker. From 1962, he was based mainly in Britain. He was also a visiting professor at Cornell University in New York. Pilger was a critic of American, Australian, and British foreign policy, which he considered to be driven by an imperialist and colonialist agenda. He criticised his native country's treatment of Indigenous Australians. He first drew international attention for his reports on the Cambodian genocide. Pilger's career as a documentary filmmaker began with ''The Quiet Mutiny'' (1970), made during one of his visits to Vietnam, and continued with over 50 documentaries thereafter. ABC Radio Hobart
ABC Radio Hobart (call sign: 7ZR) is the ABC Local Radio station for Hobart, Tasmania, owned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. History Officially opened on 22 June 1938, plans surrounding the initial broadcast of 7ZR were forced to be amended due to a cable fault between Tasmania and the mainland. The opening broadcast was intended to be part of a national program with prime minister Joseph Lyons declaring the station officially open in a live broadcast from Canberra. However, because of the fault, the opening broadcast was a statewide program rather than a national program with Lyons pre-recording his opening remarks which were then played during the opening broadcast. Christopher Gerald Uhlmann (born 24 June 1960) is a former security guard, Australian journalist and television presenter. Career Uhlmann was formerly a seminarian, a security guard, and a journalist with ''The Canberra Times'' before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation as a radio producer in 1998. Michael Rowland (born 8 July 1968) is an Australian television news presenter and journalist, currently working for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, having previously been an American affairs correspondent in Washington. Virginia Frances Trioli (born 16 August 1965) is an Australian journalist, author, radio and television presenter. Career Born in Bendigo, Trioli attended Donvale High School and graduated from La Trobe University in the 1980s with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a fine arts major in cinema. Tony Eastley is an Australian newspaper journalist and radio and television newsreader and host. Journalism career Eastley began his journalism career in the 1970s with ''The Examiner'' newspaper in Launceston, Tasmania before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1979. Brian Francis Johns (6 May 1936 – 1 January 2016) was an Australian company director and journalist, who was managing director of the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) from 1987 to 1992, and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) from 1995 to 2000.
