A31 Motorway (Netherlands)
The A31 / N31 is a motorway and an expressway in the Netherlands. It connects the A7 motorway (Netherlands), A7 near Zurich (Friesland), Zurich with the A7 near Drachten, passing close to Leeuwarden, the provincial capital. It is slightly unusual due to it changing from full motorway to normal 2-lane road along various sections of its 65 km length. Route description The short section between the Zurich interchange with the A7, and exit 15 for Zurich (approx 1.7 km) is designated as the A31 and is built to motorway standards. The next 7 km continues as a 4-lane expressway, until the road narrows to just a normal 2-lane road for the next 3 km while it passes over an elevated section through Harlingen, Netherlands, Harlingen. This section from Zurich to Harlingen is designated as the N31, but retains the motorway-style grade separation, grade separated intersections. Franeker
Franeker (; fry, Frjentsjer) is one of the eleven historical cities of Friesland and capital of the municipality of Waadhoeke. It is located north of the Van Harinxmakanaal and about 20 km west of Leeuwarden. As of 1 January 2014, it had 12,781 inhabitants. The Eise Eisinga Planetarium, established in 1781, is located in the city. History Franeker was founded around 800 as a Carolingian stronghold. The name probably derives from ''Froon-acker'', meaning "land of the lord/king"; the oldest street in the city is still called Froonacker. Southwest Friesland ( fy, Súdwest-Fryslân ) is a municipality in the Northern Netherlands, located in the province of Friesland. It had a population of 84,092 in August 2017. Sneek is the municipal seat. With a total area of 841.56 km2, Súdwest-Fryslân is the largest municipality by area in the Netherlands. Smallingerland
Smallingerland (; fy, ) is a municipality in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. Population centres Boornbergum, De Tike, De Veenhoop, De Wilgen, Drachten (main town), Drachtstercompagnie, Goëngahuizen, Houtigehage, Kortehemmen, Nijega, Opeinde, Oudega, Rottevalle and Smalle Ee. History The name "Smallingerland" is derived from the former hamlet Smalle Ee, which used to have a major monastery. Dronrijp
Dronryp ( nl, Dronrijp) is a village in the Dutch municipality of Waadhoeke. On 1 January 2017, it had 3,281 inhabitants. History and architecture Before 2018, the village was part of the Menameradiel municipality. A few centuries BC, a settlement developed around where the street Tsjerkebuorren is now (Stenvert et al., 2000). Another settlement came into existence nearby when a canal between Leeuwarden and Harlingen was completed in 1507. (Part of it was filled up in 1940.) Between roughly 1850 and 1950, these two gradually merged. Marssum
Marsum or Marssum is a village in Waadhoeke in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,052 in January 2017. Before 2018, the village was part of the Menameradiel municipality. Every year a Marsumer of the year is chosen and awarded an award called the Gilded Shit Broom. There are two windmills in Marsum, ''De Marssumermolen'' and ''Terpzigt''. History The village was first mentioned in 1344 as Mersum, and means "settlement on swampy land (marsh)". In civil engineering (more specifically highway engineering), grade separation is a method of aligning a junction of two or more surface transport axes at different heights (grades) so that they will not disrupt the traffic flow on other transit routes when they cross each other. Harlingen, Netherlands
Harlingen (; fy, Harns ) is a Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality and a city in the northern Netherlands, in the province of Friesland on the coast of Wadden Sea. Harlingen is a town with a long history of fishing and shipping that received City rights in the Netherlands, city rights in 1234.
