Marssum
Marsum or Marssum is a village in Waadhoeke in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,052 in January 2017. Before 2018, the village was part of the Menameradiel municipality. Every year a Marsumer of the year is chosen and awarded an award called the Gilded Shit Broom. There are two windmills in Marsum, ''De Marssumermolen'' and ''Terpzigt''. History The village was first mentioned in 1344 as Mersum, and means "settlement on swampy land (marsh)". Marsum is a '' terp'' (artificial living hill) village from the start of our era with a radial structure. Around 1050, it became part of the Hoge dijk, a dike to protect against the Middelzee. The Dutch Reformed church dates from the 12th century. In the 13th century, it was enlarged and a tower was added. The church was heightened in the 15th century. De Marssumermolen, Marssum
De Marsummermolen en, The mill of Marssum is a smock mill in Marsum, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 1903. The mill has been restored to working order and is used as a training mill. It is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 28624. History ''De Marssummermolen'' was built in 1903 by millwright J H Westra of Franeker. The mill can drain the polder, or pump water into the polder, or pump water in a closed circuit. Restorations were undertaken in 1976, and 1992–94. It is used as a training mill ( nl, lesmolen), and was the first mill in Friesland to be designated as such. A further restoration was undertaken in 2000. Terpzigt, Marssum
Terpzigt is a drainage mill in Marssum, Friesland, Netherlands. It is the smallest ''spinnenkop'', a type of hollow post windmill. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 8625. History The windmill was built in 1888. Before the merger of several waterboards it drained the polder Tolsma. It was restored to working order in 1981 by millwright Dijkstra from Giekerk though it can no longer drain water from the polder, instead it pumps water round in a circuit. In 2011 the windshaft and stocks were replaced. Description ''Terpzigt'' is what the Dutch describe as a "spinnenkop" (English: spiderhead mill). It is a small hollow post mill winded by a winch. Waadhoeke
Waadhoeke is a municipality of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It was established 1 January 2018 and consists of the former municipalities of Franekeradeel, het Bildt, Menameradiel and parts of Littenseradiel, all four of which were dissolved on the same day. The municipality is located in the province of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. Waadhoeke is bordered by Harlingen, Terschelling, Ferwerderadiel, Leeuwarden and Súdwest-Fryslân. The population in January 2019 was 46,133. It is Friesland's sixth-most-populous municipality. The largest population centre (2018 population, 12,793) is Franeker. Poptaslot
Poptaslot or Heringastate is a '' stins''—a type of luxurious house often used by and/or built for the nobility of Frisia, many of which are built to look like castles (the term literally means "stone-house")—in the Dutch province of Friesland (Fryslân). It was founded somewhere between 1512 and 1525, probably by Sasker van Camstra. It was probably named Heringastate when it was founded, using his mother’s surname Heringa. Around 1631 it was significantly changed and modernised. Its last inhabitant, Doctor Henricus Popta, declared that his house should never be lived in again and should be preserved. Today slot guardians (Dutch: ''slotvoogden''), of which four are currently active, still preserve the ''stins''. Middelzee
The Middelzee (Dutch for "middle sea"; fry, Middelsee), also called Bordine, was the estuary mouth of the River Boorne (West Frisian: ''Boarn'') now in the Dutch province of Friesland. It ran from as far south as Sneek northward to the Wadden Sea and marked the border between main Frisian regions of Westergoa (Westergo) and Eastergoa (Oostergo). Other historical names for the Middelzee include Bordaa, Borndiep, Boerdiep, and Bordena. The names like Bordine, mean "border". Pre-history Back in the Pleistocene the Boorne was a river that had a drainage basin in Friesland, Drenthe, and Groningen. It flowed from Saalien glacial till plateau in a southwest direction, and met the sea west of Het Bildt. The Boorne passed the current location of Akkrum and Rauwerd. Leeuwarden Air Base ( nl, Vliegbasis Leeuwarden) is a military airbase used by the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) - nl, Koninklijke Luchtmacht (''KLu''), .
