5th Air Corps (Germany)
5th Air Corps (''V. Fliegerkorps'') was formed 11 October 1939 in Gersthofen from the 5th Air Division. The Corps was transferred to Brussels on 30 November 1941 with the intention to transform it into a mine laying corps. The plan was abandoned and half of the Staff was transferred to Mariupol in December 1941 and was renamed ''Sonderstab Krim'' (Special Staff Crimea). The other half was transferred to Smolensk and formed the ''Luftwaffenkommando Ost'' in April 1942. Robert Ritter Von Greim
Robert ''Ritter'' von Greim (born Robert Greim; 22 June 1892 – 24 May 1945) was a German field marshal and First World War flying ace. In April 1945, in the last days of World War II, Adolf Hitler appointed Greim commander-in-chief of the ''Luftwaffe'' (German Air Force) after Hermann Göring had been dismissed for treason. He is the last person ever promoted to field marshal in the German armed forces. After the surrender of Nazi Germany in May 1945, Greim was captured by the Allies. He committed suicide in an American-controlled prison on 24 May 1945. The German language term ''Stab'' (literal translation: " staff") was used during World War II to designate a headquarters unit of the German ''Luftwaffe'' (air force). There were ''Stab'' units at the level of a '' Gruppe'' or ''Geschwader'' – units that were equivalent to wings and groups in the air forces of the English-speaking world. ''Stab'' units directly controlled aircraft as well as controlling those belonging to subordinate units.
