Radio 5AU (1242 AM) is a South Australian radio station broadcasting a classic hits format from its transmitter site at Mambray Creek into the Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo area and north into the Flinders Ranges. Established with studios in Port Augusta, first broadcast 25 May 1938. Also separate studio facilities in Whyalla. During the 1940s/1950s they relayed 5KA Adelaide programs in some day-parts. 5AU often broadcast balls from Whyalla and Hawker. Transmission power was upgraded (located at Nectar Brook 32.5 km south of Port Augusta) with an S.T.C. 2,000 watt transmitter in 1961. and relay transmitters at Port Pirie and Roxby Downs. To improve coverage, particularly into the Whyalla area, the transmitter station was relocated in 1976 to Mambray Creek, 47 km south of Port Augusta. Mambray Creek, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Mambray Creek is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the east coast of Spencer Gulf about north of the state capital of Adelaide and about north of the city of Port Pirie. A post office which was located within section 68 in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Winninowie opened in 1879 with the name ‘Old Baroota’ which was changed to 'Mambray Creek' in 1880, then to 'Mount Gullet' in 1924 and back to 'Mambray Creek' in 1939. A school of the same name operated from 1939 to 1972. Name and boundaries for the locality were assigned on 13 March 1997. Mambray Creek’s name is reported as having two possible sources. Firstly, Rodney Cockburn, author of ''Nomenclature of South Australia'', suggested that the name is a derivation of ‘Mamre’ which was the name of a house near Angaston built by a William Salter. Whyalla was founded as "Hummocks Hill", and was known by that name until 1916. Grant Broadcasters is an Australian regional radio network. Founded in 1942, by 2019 it owned 53 radio stations. In 2022 it sold 46 to Here, There & Everywhere retaining shareholdings in seven in Canberra, Geelong, Goulburn and Perth. History Grant Broadcasters was founded by Walter Grant in 1942 when he bought 2DU in Dubbo. In 1972 a shareholding in 2ST in Nowra was purchased followed in 1979 by 2PK in Parkes and in 1982 2MG in Mudgee. In 1986 2DU, 2PK and 2MG were sold with full ownership taken of 2ST. Over the next three decades, the company expanded through acquisition, purchasing radio stations in all states and territories of Australia, owning 53 stations by November 2021. Flinders Ranges
The Flinders Ranges are the largest mountain range in South Australia, which starts about north of Adelaide. The ranges stretch for over from Port Pirie to Lake Callabonna. The Adnyamathanha people are the Aboriginal group who have inhabited the range for tens of thousands of years. Its most well-known landmark is Wilpena Pound / Ikara, a formation that creates a natural amphitheatre covering and containing the range's highest peak, St Mary Peak (). The ranges include several national parks, the largest being the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, as well as other protected areas. Kadina ( ) is a town on the Yorke Peninsula of the Australian state of South Australia, approximately 144 kilometres north-northwest of the state capital of Adelaide.
