320th Special Tactics Squadron
The 320th Special Tactics Squadron (320th STS) is a Special Tactics unit of the United States Air Force Special Operations Command, based at Kadena Air Base. The 320th was originally constituted in 1943 during World War II as an aircraft warning unit, the 320th Fighter Control Squadron. The squadron was sent to the Pacific at the end of 1943 and served there until its inactivation and disbandment after the end of the war. It was reconstituted and reactivated in 1992 at Kadena as the 320th Special Tactics Squadron. Initially with the 720th Special Tactics Group, it was soon transferred to the 353rd Special Operations Group. The Orlando Fighter Wing was a wing of the United States Army Air Forces. Its last assignment was with the Army Air Forces School of Applied Tactics, stationed at Orlando Army Air Base, Florida It was inactivated on 1 April 1944. The wing helped to develop air defense tactics and trained organizations and personnel in air defense techniques. Also served in defense of the Orlando area, using such tactical organizations as were assigned or attached. The XIII Bomber Command was an inactive United States Army Air Forces formation. It was last assigned to Thirteenth Air Force, based at Clark Field, Luzon, Philippines. Wakde Airfield
Wakde Airfield is a World War II airfield located on Wakde Island, off the northern coast of New Guinea in Papua, Indonesia. The airfield was abandoned after the war and today is almost totally returned to its natural state. History The airfield was constructed by the Japanese and was first noted by the Americans in February 1943. By June 1943, a single coral–surfaced 5,400' x 390' runway, with dispersal areas off the northern side was identified, and a barracks area on the south side was visible. By September, the Japanese had expanded the base further with a radio station and quarters for 1,000 personnel. Wadke Airfield was seized by the United States Army on 15 May 1944.
