2022 United States Secretary Of State Elections
The 2022 United States secretary of state elections were held on November 8, 2022, to elect the secretaries of state in twenty-seven states. These elections took place concurrently with several other federal, state, and local elections. The elections for secretary of state had taken on heightened importance due to former President Donald Trump's baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen. Many had argued that election officials such as secretaries of state could have the power to overturn the 2024 election, should its outcome be disagreeable to the losing candidate. As such, both parties are expending far more resources than in previous cycles on these races. Jesse White (politician)
Jesse Clark White (born June 23, 1934) is an American educator, politician and former athlete from the State of Illinois. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 37th Secretary of State of Illinois from 1999 to 2023. He was the longest-serving American to hold this office. A popular office holder, White declined to seek reelection in 2022 for a seventh term. Previously, he served as the Cook County Recorder of Deeds from 1993 to 1999 and in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1975 to 1993. Karl Allred is an American politician who served as the Secretary of State of Wyoming. He was appointed by Wyoming governor Mark Gordon in September 2022 to replace Edward Buchanan, who resigned on September 15 to become a Goshen County district court judge. Alvin A. Jaeger (born December 10, 1943) is an American politician and member of the Republican Party who had served as the Secretary of State of North Dakota from 1993 to 2023. John Harold Merrill (born November 12, 1963) is an American politician who served as the 53rd secretary of state of Alabama from 2015 to 2023. He served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 2010 to 2014. Merrill is a member of the Republican Party. Early life Merrill was born in Wedowee, Alabama, and raised in Heflin, Alabama.
