2019 Montenegrin Anti-corruption Protests
In February 2019, protests began in Montenegro against President Milo Đukanović, Prime Minister Duško Marković, and the government led by the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), which has been in power since the introduction of multi-party system in 1990. The anti-government protests have been organized by the civil sector of the Montenegrin society, concurrently with the protests in the neighboring Serbia, that had similar goals. The protests failed in mid-2019. Involved in corruption affairs within the government and the ruling DPS remain in their offices. Podgorica (Cyrillic script, Cyrillic: Подгорица, ; Literal translation, lit. 'under the hill') is the Capital city, capital and List of cities and towns in Montenegro, largest city of Montenegro. The city was formerly known as Titograd (Cyrillic script, Cyrillic: Титоград, ) between 1946 and 1992—in the period that Montenegro formed, as the Socialist Republic of Montenegro in honour of Marshal of Yugoslavia, Marshal Josip Broz Tito. The city was largely destroyed during the bombing of Podgorica in World War II and accordingly the city is now dominated by architecture from the following decades of communism. Duško Knežević (Montenegrin Cyrillic: Душко Кнежевић) is the founder and president of the board of directors oAtlas Group Corporation (AGC) a financial group based in Montenegro consisting of companies with interests in banks in Serbia, Cyprus, Russia and Great Britain. In addition to his business interests, he is the founder and president of the board of two business-oriented universities, in Montenegro and in Serbia. In April 2010, Knežević became a member of Clinton Global Initiative. Knežević founded thAtlas Foundationin 2010. The Ministry of Internal Affairs ( Montenegrin: ''Ministarstvo Unutrašnjih Poslova Crne Gore / Министарство унутрашњих послова'') is a Ministry in the Government of Montenegro, tasked with oversight and strategic planning of law enforcement apparatus in Montenegro, including budgetary oversight and internal affairs, as well as direct control over disaster relief and emergency situations management, maintaining citizen, vehicle and firearms databases, issuance of ID cards, passports, driving and firearms licences.
