2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship
The 2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship was held at the Edel-optics.de Arena in Hamburg, Germany, from 16 to 26 August 2018. Both men's and women's tournaments were held, with 12 women's and 16 men's teams competing, representing 19 different nations. Each team selected 12 players for the tournament. The men's competition was won by Great Britain, with the United States winning silver and Australia winning bronze. The women's competition was won by the Netherlands, with Great Britain winning silver and the host nation winning bronze. Medallists This was the best ever performance at a wheelchair basketball world championship by both the British men's and women's teams. The former had never won an official championship before (they had claimed the 1973 unofficial title), and the latter had never made the finals. Alejandro Zarzuela
Alejandro Zarzuela Beltrán (born 2 April 1987) is a Spanish 3 point wheelchair basketball player. He has represented Spain as a member of the national team at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and at the U-23 European Championships. As a club wheelchair basketball player in Spain, he has played all but two seasons on the same team with his twin brother, Pablo. He has won several Copas del Rey, league championships and a European Champions League. Personal He was born in Andalucia. He has a twin brother named Pablo Zarzuela. Amy Conroy
Amy Conroy (born 22 October 1992) is a 4.0 point British wheelchair basketball player who represented Great Britain in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, the 2016 Summer Paralympics in a Rio de Janeiro, co captained the team to win Gold in the under 25 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Beijing and won a silver medal at the 2018 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Hamburg. Biography Amy Conroy was born on 22 October 1992. When she was young, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a common bone cancer that runs in her family. Chemotherapy failed to arrest the cancer and she had to have her left leg amputated. Conroy tried wheelchair basketball and found that she enjoyed the speed and aggression of the sport. Laurie Anne Williams (born 4 February 1992) is a 2.5 point British-Irish wheelchair basketball player who participated at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, and the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, representing Great Britain. Arinn Young (born July 10, 1996) is a Canadian 4.5 point wheelchair basketball player who won a gold medal at the 2014 Women's World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Toronto. Biography Arinn Young was born in St. Albert, Alberta, on July 10, 1996. She is nicknamed "Juice" due to her practice of drinkling juice boxes during a game. She started playing basketball when she was five years old, and went on to win 15 MVP awards and two city championships. She also played other sports, including lacrosse and horse riding, and was placed third in shot-put at the Alberta Track and Field Provincial Championship. Cobi Crispin
Cobi Crispin (born 22 December 1988) is a 4 point wheelchair basketball forward from Western Australia. She began playing wheelchair basketball in 2003 when she was 17 years old. The Victorian Institute of Sport and Direct Athlete Support (DAS) program have provided assistance to enable her to play. She played club basketball in the Women's National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) for the Victorian Dandenong Rangers in 2012 after having previously played for the Western Stars. In 2015 she began playing for the Minecraft Comets. She played for the University of Alabama in the United States in 2013–15. Amber Merritt
Amber Merritt (born 17 February 1993) is a 4.5-point wheelchair basketball player who plays forward. She represented Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, where she won a silver medal and at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo. Born in England, Merritt moved to Australia when she was ten years old. She was originally a swimmer, but was recruited into basketball by the Paralympic Hall of Fame coach Frank Ponta in 2007.
