2016 Nauruan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 9 July 2016. On 10 June 2016, the Parliament was dissolved by President Baron Waqa after it completed its three-year term. Speaker Ludwig Scotty called the elections for 9 July, with nominations taking place between 19 and 25 June 2016. Electoral system The 19 members of Parliament were elected from eight multi-member constituencies using the Dowdall system, a version of ranked voting; voters ranked candidates, with the votes counted as a fraction of 1 divided by the ranking number (e.g. a candidate ranked second will be scored as ½); the candidates with the highest total are elected. Results Aftermath The newly elected Parliament convened on 13 July, with all new members joining the presidential majority, allowing Baron Waqa to be re-elected President by sixteen votes to two against opposition candidate Riddell Akua. Baron Waqa
Baron Divavesi Waqa (; born 31 December 1959) is a Nauruan politician who was the 14th President of Nauru from 11 June 2013 until 27 August 2019. He previously served as Minister of Education from 2004 to 2007. Political role Waqa was elected in the May 2003 elections to the Parliament of Nauru, representing the constituency of Boe. Under President Ludwig Scotty, he served as Minister of the Interior and of Education; however, he had to leave the post upon Scotty's replacement by René Harris. He kept his seat in Parliament. On 23 April 2004, Waqa and his colleagues Kieren Keke, David Adeang and Fabian Ribauw participated in protests at the Nauru International Airport in Yaren; these were meant to show displeasure regarding government policy against Afghan asylum-seekers in Australia and the Flotilla of Hope, as well as against the deadlock then encountered in Parliament. Landon Deireragea
Landon Deireragea (born 16 May 1960) is a Nauruan politician. Parliamentary role Deireragea has been elected to parliament in the 2008 general elections, gaining the seat of Cyril Buraman. He represents the Anetan Constituency in the Parliament of Nauru. Deireragea was defeated in the 2013 parliamentary elections, with Cyril Buraman taking the seat. Deputy Speaker After the June 2010 general elections Deireragea was elected Deputy Speaker of Parliament. In this role he deputizes for the Speaker of Parliament. Thus far in his term the office of speaker has fallen vacant twice, during which time Deireragea became Acting Speaker. The first period was the longest, July 9 until November 1, 2010. This period of vacancy was caused by the removal of Aloysius Amwano from office and was drawn out by deadlock over who should be speaker. Sprent Dabwido
Sprent Arumogo Dabwido (16 September 1972 – 8 May 2019) was a Nauruan politician who served as the President of Nauru between 2011 and 2013, and was also a weightlifter. The son of a parliamentarian, Dabwido was originally elected to the Meneng Constituency in the Parliament of Nauru at the 2004 elections. Having served as Minister for Telecommunications in Marcus Stephen's government from 2009, Dabwido joined the Nauruan opposition faction in November 2011 after Stephen's resignation, and, having passed a motion of no confidence against interim president Freddie Pitcher, was elected president four days later. In his role as president, Dabwido functioned as chairman of the Cabinet of Nauru, and held various portfolios in the Nauruan government. Vodrick Detsiogo
Vodrick Detsiogo is a Nauruan politician. Career Before entering politics, Detsiogo worked as a pilot in Japan, Nauru, and New Zealand. In the 2016 Nauruan parliamentary election, Detsiogo was elected to represent the Meneng Constituency. He was elected alongside Tawaki Kam and Lionel Aingimea. On 20 July, he was sworn in as assistant minister of education, transport, and the Nauru Air Corporation. In parliament, he served as a member of the Public Accounts Committee and the Constitutional Review Committee. He also served as Chair of Subsidiary Legislation and Deputy Chairman of Committees. Kinza Godfrey Clodumar (8 February 1945 – 29 November 2021) was a Nauruan politician who served as President of Nauru from 1997 to 1998. Background Clodumar was born in Boe. He was a member of the indigenous population of Nauru, and he was concerned with environmental issues. He was a Member of Parliament for many years. Clodumar was the only Nauruan politician to have been elected to parliament in two different constituencies. He served his first two terms for the Aiwo Constituency when ousting Itubwa Amram in the 1971 elections; after being re-elected thrice Clodumar resigned his post in early 1979, but was re-elected in the 1983 elections.
