Shadlog Bernicke
Shadlog Armait Bernicke (born 8 July 1966) is a Nauruan politician. Political role Bernicke was elected to parliament in the 2007 general elections. He gained the former seat of Terangi Adam. He has been re-elected in the 2008 polls. Parliamentary constituency He represents the Buada Constituency in the Parliament of Nauru. He became acting Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru on 27 April 2010 not long before elections were held. Waqa Cabinet Bernicke is currently serving as a minister in the Cabinet of Nauru. His positions are Minister for the Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust, Minister for the Nauru Utilities Corporation, and Minister of Telecommunications. Austin Bernicke
Austin Bernicke (died 13 January 1977) was a Nauruan politician. He was a member of the first Local Government Council in 1951, then a member of Parliament after it was established in 1966, serving until his death in 1977. He also served as a cabinet minister from 1968 until 1976. Biography Bernicke was a member of the Eamwitmwit tribe. He became the first Nauruan to attend university when he began studying medicine at Queen's College at the University of Melbourne. He returned to Nauru to work as a pathologist, later becoming superintendent of Nauru Hospital. 2008 Nauruan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on April 26, 2008, following the dissolving of Parliament by President Marcus Stephen on April 18. The decision came after what Stephen referred to as "months of political deadlock". Of the parliament's eighteen members, nine supported the Stephen government and nine were in opposition. Events leading to election The deadlock had been exacerbated by a crisis between the President and the Speaker of Parliament, Opposition member David Adeang. On March 22, Adeang had called a Parliamentary session, allegedly without informing government ministers, who therefore did not attend. Opposition MPs, Adeang included, constituted a majority of legislators present, and passed a ruling outlawing dual citizenship for Members of Parliament. Nauru elects on a national level a head of state (the president) and a legislature. Parliament has 19 members (increased from 18 for the 2013 election), elected for a three-year term in multi-seat constituencies. The president is elected for a three-year term by the parliament. Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust
The Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust (NPRT) was a sovereign wealth fund developed by the government of the Republic of Nauru in which the government invested money from the state-owned mining company, Nauru Phosphate Corporation. This money was then re-invested in a real estate portfolio, among other things, to provide the government with a reliable national income following the depletion of minable phosphates on the island. Although at one time successful, mismanagement and corruption later essentially bankrupted the fund, thus virtually bankrupting the entire Republic. Responsibility for the Trust rests with the Ministry for the Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust, a Cabinet position.
