2014 European Curling Championships
The 2014 European Curling Championships were held November 22 to 29 at the Palladium de Champéry in Champéry, Switzerland. Switzerland last hosted the European Curling Championships in 2010, when it was also held in Champéry. The Group C competitions was held in October at the PWA Silverdome in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands. At the conclusion of the championships, the top eight women's teams will go to the 2015 World Women's Curling Championship in Sapporo, and the top eight men's teams will go to the 2015 Ford World Men's Curling Championship in Halifax. This edition of the European Curling Championships marks the first appearance of Israel at an international curling event. Champéry
Champéry (; frp, Champérié) is a municipality in the district of Monthey in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. History Champéry is first mentioned in 1286 as ''Champery'' The Hotel Dent-du-Midi opened in 1857. In 1969, Champéry became one of the founding villages of the Portes du Soleil ski area and resort. Geography Champéry has an area, , of . Of this area, 32.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 33.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 3.6% is settled (buildings or roads) and 30.3% is unproductive land. The municipality is located in the Monthey district, in the Val-d'Illiez, on the French border. It consists of the linear village of Champéry, which was part of the municipality of Val-d'Illiez until 1839 when it became independent. Christine Urech
Christine Urech (born January 15, 1984 in Biel/Bienne) is a Swiss curler from Lucerne. She won a gold medal at the 2014 and 2016 World Women's Curling Championships as lead for Binia Feltscher. Career In her junior career, Urech played as fourth for Stéphanie Jäggi. They played in the 2004 World Junior Curling Championships, finishing in fifth place. She then played as third for Irene Schori until the 2007–08 season. She then moved to Silvana Tirinzoni's rink to play second until the 2009–10, when she joined Binia Feltscher's rink. After one year, the team added Franziska Kaufmann, and Urech moved down to the lead position. Schori joined Feltscher's rink as third for the next season. 2015 Ford World Men's Curling Championship
The 2015 World Men's Curling Championship (branded as Ford World Men's Curling Championship 2015 for sponsorship reasons) was held from March 28 to April 5 at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It marked the first time that a World Curling Championship had been held in Halifax, and the first time that a World Curling Championship event had been held in the province since the World Junior Curling Championships were held in Dartmouth in 1986. The 2015 World Women's Curling Championship (branded as the Zen-Noh World Women's Curling Championship 2015 for sponsorship reasons) was held from March 14 to 22 at the Tsukisamu Gymnasium in Sapporo, Japan. It marks the second time that a world championship has been held in Japan, after the 2007 World Women's Curling Championship in Aomori. World Curling Federation
The World Curling Federation (WCF) is the world governing body for curling accreditation, with offices in Perth, Scotland. It was formed out of the International Curling Federation (ICF), when the push for Olympic Winter Sport status was made. The name was changed in 1990. The ICF was initially formed in 1966 as a committee of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club in Perth after the success of the Scotch Cup series of world championships held between Canada and Scotland. At the outset, it comprised the associations of Scotland, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States. In the wake of its formation, it sanctioned the World Curling Championships. The WCF currently sanctions 15 international curling events (see below). Zoetermeer
Zoetermeer () is a city in the Western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality covers an area of of which is water. A small village until the late 1960s, it had 6,392 inhabitants in 1950. By 2013 this had grown to 123,328, making it the third largest population centre in the province of South Holland, after Rotterdam and The Hague. 2010 European Curling Championships
The 2010 Le Gruyère European Curling Championships were held in Champéry, Switzerland from December 3–11, 2010. The Group C matches took place from September 24–28 at the Greenacres Ice Rink in Howwood, Scotland. The winners of the Group C matches advanced to the Group B playoffs in Monthey. The Group A round robin matches took place from December 4–11 at the Palladium de Champéry in Champéry, while the Group B matches took place at the Verney Arena in Monthey. Sweden's Stina Viktorsson won the gold medal when her rink defeated the Eve Muirhead rink from Scotland. Switzerland's Mirjam Ott won the bronze medal game over Russia's Liudmila Privivkova in 9 ends. European Curling Championships
The European Curling Championships are annual curling tournaments held in Europe between various European nations. The European Curling Championships are usually held in early to mid December. The tournament also acts as a qualifier for the World Championships, where the top eight nations qualify. In November 1974, a six-nations tournament was held in Zürich, Switzerland which included Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, and Norway. In March 1975, it was decided that the championships would be competed in December.
