26 Motorised Infantry Brigade (Namibia)
26 Motorised Infantry Brigade (pronounced as ''Two Six Motorised Infantry Brigade'') is a brigade of the Namibian Army based at Grootfontein. The prefix "26" is taken from 26 August 1966, the day on which SWAPO guerrillas first encountered the South African security forces at Ongulumbashe. The brigade is responsible for defence of the Northern areas of Namibia. Its subordinate units are situated in Zambezi, Kavango, Omusati, Kunene and Oshana regions. Namibian Army
The Namibian Army is the ground warfare branch of the Namibian Defence Force. History Development of Namibia's army was fastest of the three arms of Service. The first units of the Army were deployed as early as 1990. The Army was formed when two enemies South West African Territorial Force and the People's Liberation Army of Namibia where inducted after Namibia's independence into the newly created Namibian Defence Force. Major General Tomas Nopoudjuu Hamunyela is a retired Namibian military officer. His last command was as the Commander of the Namibian Army. Career His military career started in 1977 when he joined the People's Liberation Army of Namibia in exile. He rose through PLAN to hold different appointments. Oshakati
Oshakati is a town in northern Namibia. It is the regional capital of the Oshana Region and one of Namibia's largest places. Oshakati was founded in July 1966 and proclaimed a town in 1992. The town was used as a base of operations by the South African Defence Force (SADF) during the South African Border War. History In Oshiwambo, the language of the Ovambo people, the town's name means "that which is in between", although some believe that the name (Oshakati, also Otshakati) was used to refer to the broadcasting tower ( high), the tallest structure in the town centre and in Namibia. On 19 February 1988, a bomb blast occurred in Oshakati at the First National Bank, killing 27 people and badly injuring nearly 30 others, most of them nurses and teachers. Katima Mulilo
Katima Mulilo or simply Katima is the capital of the Zambezi Region in Namibia. It is located in the Caprivi Strip. It had 28,362 inhabitants in 2010, and comprises two Constituencies of Namibia, electoral constituencies, Katima Mulilo Rural and Katima Mulilo Urban. Rundu
Rundu is the capital and largest city of the Kavango-East Region in northern Namibia. It lies on the border with Angola on the banks of the Kavango River about above sea level. Rundu's population is growing rapidly. The 2001 census counted 36,964 inhabitants; and for the 2011 census it has climbed to 63,430. History In 1936, it became the seat of the local governor as it replaced Nkurenkuru as capital of the Kavango district.
