218th (Edmonton) Battalion, CEF
The 218th Battalion, CEF, was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Based in Edmonton, Alberta, the unit began recruiting in early 1916 in that city. On October 11, 1916, soldiers from the 218th Battalion led an effort to overcome the local police in Calgary. "The city virtually is in the hands of the soldier mob." Sergeant Morris "Two Gun" Cohen was implicated as a leader of the events during a series of trials held in the city; however, he was acquitted after successfully defending himself in court. On February 8, 1917, after the unit was formally re-formed, soldiers from the former battalion rioted in Calgary after being ordered to depart immediately for Europe. Canadian Expeditionary Force
The Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) was the expeditionary field force of Canada during the First World War. It was formed following Britain’s declaration of war on Germany on 15 August 1914, with an initial strength of one infantry division. The division subsequently fought at Ypres on the Western Front, with a newly raised second division reinforcing the committed units to form the Canadian Corps. The CEF and corps was eventually expanded to four infantry divisions, which were all committed to the fighting in France and Belgium along the Western Front. A fifth division was partially raised in 1917, but was broken up in 1918 and used as reinforcements following heavy casualties. 97th Battalion (American Legion), CEF
The 97th Battalion (American Legion), CEF, was an infantry battalion of the Great War Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 97th Battalion was authorized on 22 December 1915 and embarked for Britain in May 1916 but were halted in Aldershot, Nova Scotia when the American government protested the title of American Legion as they were officially a neutral state. The delay caused a number of officers to resign and a number of men deserted when it became clear they would not enter the front lines. Finally the designation ‘American Legion’ was dropped and the unit could proceed overseas. 31 officers and 798 other ranks boaded the RMS Olympic on 19 September 1916. The Legislature of Alberta is the unicameral legislature of the province of Alberta, Canada. Andrew Stefan Shandro (April 3, 1886 – January 13, 1942), was a Ukrainian-Canadian politician from Alberta. In 1913 he became the first Ukrainian Canadian to serve in the Alberta Legislature. Early life Andrew Stefan Shandro was born April 3, 1886 in Ruskiy-Banyliw Bukowina to Stefan Shandro and his wife, Anastasia (née Ostashek). He was a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. His grandfather was a judge and an uncle was a general in the Austro-Hungarian army. He emigrated to Canada in 1899 with his parents from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and settled northeast of Andrew, Alberta near the North Saskatchewan River. He became a prominent farmer and was postmaster of Shandro, Alberta, a rural community that bore his family's name. In 1905 he married Rose Hawrelak, daughter of Nicoli Hawrelak of Bukowina; they had six children.
