Alberta Legislature
The Legislature of Alberta is the unicameral legislature of the province of Alberta, Canada. The legislature is made of two elements: the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta,. and the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The legislature has existed since Alberta was formed out of part of the North-West Territories in 1905. Like the Canadian federal government, Alberta uses a Westminster-style parliamentary government, in which members are sent to the Legislative Assembly after general elections and the lieutenant governor appoints the person who can command a majority of the members of the Assembly, typically the leader of the party with the most seats, as Premier of Alberta. The premier then recommends the appointment of the Executive Council of Alberta. The premier is Alberta's head of government, while the King of Canada is its head of state. 30th Alberta Legislature
The 30th Alberta Legislative Assembly was constituted after the general election on April 16, 2019. The United Conservative Party (UCP), led by Jason Kenney, won a majority of seats and formed the government. The New Democrats, led by outgoing Premier Rachel Notley, won the second most seats and formed the official opposition. The premiership of Jason Kenney began on April 30, 2019, when Jason Kenney and his first cabinet were sworn in by Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Lois Mitchell. On October 11, 2022, Kenney resigned, and Danielle Smith, the new leader of the UCP, was sworn in as premier by Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani. 1st Alberta Legislature
The 1st Alberta Legislative Assembly was in session from November 9, 1905, to Monday, March 22, 1909, with the membership of the assembly determined by the results of the 1905 Alberta general election which was held on November 9, 1905. The Legislature officially began on November 9, 1905, and continued until the fourth session was prorogued on February 25, 1909, and dissolved the next day on February 26, 1909, prior to the 1909 Alberta general election. Alberta's first government was controlled by the majority Liberal Party led by Premier Alexander Rutherford. The Official Opposition was the Conservative Party led by Albert John Robertson. The Speaker was Charles W. Fisher who served in the role until his death from the 1918 flu pandemic in 1919 partway through the 4th Alberta Legislature. 14th Alberta Legislature
The 14th Alberta Legislative Assembly was in session from February 11, 1960, to May 9, 1963, with the membership of the assembly determined by the results of the 1959 Alberta general election held on June 18, 1959. The Legislature officially resumed on February 11, 1960, and continued until the fifth session was prorogued on March 29, 1963, and dissolved on May 9, 1963, prior to the 1963 Alberta general election. Alberta's fourteenth government was controlled by the majority Social Credit Party for the seventh time, led by Premier Ernest Manning who would go on to be the longest serving Premier in Alberta history.
