2024 Prefontaine Classic
The 2024 Prefontaine Classic was the 49th edition of the annual outdoor track and field meeting in Eugene, Oregon, United States. Held on 25 May at Hayward Field, it was the 5th leg of the 2024 Diamond League – the highest-level international track and field circuit. Highlights The meeting was highlighted by the Bowerman Mile. The race featured defending Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen as well as the last two world champions Josh Kerr and Jake Wightman against American mile record holder Yared Nuguse and 3000 m steeplechase world record holder Lamecha Girma. Kerr won the race in a new British record of 3:45.34. Another highlight included a new world record in the women's 10,000 metres, set by Beatrice Chebet of Kenya in a time of 28:54.14. Beatrice Chebet (born 5 March 2000) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. In 2022, she won the silver medal in the 5000 metres at the World Championships, and became Commonwealth, African and Diamond League champion. Chebet claimed the gold medal for the women's senior race at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships. She took the world under-20 title in the 5000 m in 2018 and at the 2019 World Cross Country Championships. Career In June 2018, at the age of 18, Chebet won the Kenyan Under-20s 5000 metres. Kyree King (born July 9, 1994) is an American sprinter. Career King competed collegiately at Western Kentucky before transferring to Oregon his senior year. He was an All-American in the 200 meters and was the 2017 Pac-12 Men's Track Athlete of the Year after winning the Pac-12 titles in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100m relay that year. On 10 August 2020, he ran 100 metres in 10.04 seconds at the Montverde Academy, Montverde, Florida which placed him 9th on the year list worldwide for 2020. Courtney Lindsey (born 18 November 1998) is an American track and field athlete who competes as a sprinter. Early life Born and raised in Rock Island, Illinois, he attended Rock Island High School. Kenny Bednarek (born October 14, 1998) is an American track and field sprinter from Rice Lake, Wisconsin. He specializes in the 200-meter distance, having won a silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics and at the 2022 World Championships.
