2023 Skate Canada International
The 2023 Skate Canada International was the second event of the 2023–24 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating: a senior-level international invitational competition series. It was held at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, from October 27–29. Medals were awarded in men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance. Skaters also earned points toward qualifying for the 2023–24 Grand Prix Final. ISU Grand Prix Of Figure Skating
The ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating (known as ISU Champions Series from 1995 to 1997) is a series of senior international figure skating competitions organized by the International Skating Union. The invitational series was inaugurated in 1995, incorporating several previously existing events. Medals are awarded in the disciplines of single skating, men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing. The junior-level equivalent is the ISU Junior Grand Prix. The 2023–24 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating was a series of senior international competitions organized by the International Skating Union that were held from October 2023 through December 2023. Medals were awarded in men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance. Skaters earned points based on their placements at each event and the top six in each discipline qualified to compete at the Grand Prix Final in Beijing, China. The corresponding series for junior-level skaters was the 2023–24 ISU Junior Grand Prix. Competitions The series included the following events. Madeline Schizas (born February 14, 2003) is a Canadian figure skater. She is a two-time ISU Challenger Series bronze medalist, the 2020 International Challenge Cup bronze medalist, and a two-time Canadian national champion (2022, 2023), and represented Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Personal life Schizas was born on February 14, 2003, in Oakville, Ontario. She is the daughter of economist Linda Nazareth, and former broadcaster Lou Schizas. Her mother is of Indian Canadian ancestry while her father is Greek Canadian. Schizas attended White Oaks Secondary School in Oakville. She was accepted to study music cognition at the University of Waterloo beginning in the fall of 2021 and stated her long-term aim was to become a physician. Kaiya Ruiter (born 13 May 2006) is a Canadian figure skater. She is a two-time ISU Challenger Series silver medalist, the 2024 Canadian national champion, and the 2023 Canadian national silver medalist. On the junior level, Ruiter is a two-time ISU Junior Grand Prix medalist and the 2020 Canadian junior national champion. Conrad Orzel (born July 11, 2000) is a Canadian figure skater and model. He is the 2019 Bavarian Open silver medalist and 2023 Canadian national silver medalist. Earlier in his career, he won two medals on the ISU Junior Grand Prix series and placed 13th at the 2017 and 2018 World Junior Championships. Wesley Chiu (born March 20, 2005) is a Canadian figure skater. He is a two-time Canadian national bronze medalist (2022–23).
