2021–22 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup
The International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup was the premier circuit for alpine skiing competition. The inaugural season launched in January 1967, and the season marked the 56th consecutive year for the FIS World Cup. This season began in October 2021 in Sölden, Austria, and concluded in mid-March 2022 at the finals in Courchevel/Méribel, France. It was interrupted for most of February by the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China; events were held at Xiaohaituo Alpine Skiing Field. Alexis Pinturault and Petra Vlhová were the defending overall champions, but first-time overall winner Marco Odermatt won the 2022 men's championship with three races to go and Mikaela Shiffrin won the 2022 women's championship for her fourth overall title with two races to go. Marco Odermatt
Marco Odermatt (born 8 October 1997) is a Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer who races in giant slalom and the speed disciplines. Odermatt competed for Switzerland at two Junior World Championships and three World Championships. Career At the 2016 Junior World Championships in Sochi, Odermatt won the bronze medal in super-G and the gold medal in giant slalom, which allowed him to make his World Cup debut in March 2016 in the giant slalom at the season finals in St. Moritz. At the 2018 Junior World Championships in Davos, Odermatt won an unprecedented five gold medals (combined, downhill, super-G, giant slalom, and team event). He gained his first World Cup podium at Kranjska Gora in and his first win in December 2019 in a super-G at Beaver Creek. The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup is the top international circuit of alpine skiing competitions, launched in 1966 by a group of ski racing friends and experts which included French journalist Serge Lang and the alpine ski team directors from France (Honore Bonnet) and the USA ( Bob Beattie). Lenzerheide ( Romansh: ''Lai'') is a mountain resort in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland at the foot of the Parpaner Rothorn. The village lies in the municipality Vaz/Obervaz in the district of Albula, sub-district Alvaschein. The village lies in a broadened section of the valley between the cantonal capital Chur to the north and Tiefencastel, beyond which are the Julier Pass and St Moritz. Birds Of Prey (ski Course)
Birds of Prey is a World Cup downhill ski course in the western United States, located at Beaver Creek Resort in Avon, Colorado. The race course made its World Cup debut in December 1997. Beaver Creek is a traditional early December stop on the men's World Cup calendar. The course hosted the World Championships in 1999 and 2015, and is also used for super-G and giant slalom races. Prior to 1995, the World Cup speed events in North America were usually held in the latter part of the racing season. Alexis Pinturault () (born 20 March 1991) is a French World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic medalist. With 34 World Cup victories, Pinturault is the most successful French skier in World Cup history. He represented France at six World Championships and three Winter Olympics, with four bronze medals in the giant slalom. He was the overall World Cup champion in 2021. Pinturault was the world champion in combined in 2019, the world champion in the team event in 2017, and a two-time world junior champion in giant slalom in 2009 and 2011. The Yanqing National Alpine Ski Centre is a Chinese alpine ski resort in Yanqing District, a suburban district in Beijing. It opened in 2019. It is 90 km (55 mi) northwest from the urban center of Beijing. It is the venue for all, speed and technical, both men's and women's alpine skiing events for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Alpine skiing at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held at the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Centre in Yanqing District, China. The competitions took place from 6 to 20 February 2022. Speed events were held on "Rock" course and technical events on "Ice River" course, for both men and women. Team event was held on "Rainbow." A total of 306 quota spots (153 per gender) were distributed to the alpine skiing, a reduction of 14 from 2018. Eleven events were contested: five for men, five for women, and one mixed (team). Qualification A maximum of 306 quota spots were available to athletes to compete at the games. Méribel () is a ski resort in the Tarentaise Valley in the French Alps. Méribel refers to three neighbouring villages in the Les Allues commune of the Savoie department of France, near the town of Moûtiers (), called Méribel Centre, Méribel-Mottaret and Méribel Village. The villages are within Vanoise National Park and a part of the Les Trois Vallées interlinked ski system. Méribel Les Allues is a ski resort that was developed adjacent to the traditional hamlet of Morel, with its centre situated at about 1400 metres above sea level.
