The 2021–22 Edmonton Oilers season was the 43rd season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on June 22, 1979, and 50th season overall, including their play in the World Hockey Association (WHA). Pacific Division (NHL)
The National Hockey League's Pacific Division was formed in 1993 as part of the Western Conference in a league realignment. It is also one of the two successors of the Smythe Division (the other one was the Northwest Division), though of the current teams, only the Anaheim Ducks, Seattle Kraken and Vegas Golden Knights did not play in the Smythe Division. Due to subsequent realignments, three of the Pacific Division's original teams (the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, and Vancouver Canucks) left the division in 1998 but returned in 2013. The division is the only one in the NHL without any Original Six teams. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting closure of the Canada-United States border, all eight teams were transferred into two different divisions for the 2020–21 NHL season. This is a list of seasons completed by the Edmonton Oilers professional ice hockey club. This list documents the records and playoff results of the Oilers' 49-year history in both the World Hockey Association (WHA) and later, the National Hockey League (NHL). The Edmonton Oilers began as a charter member of the World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972, and were known as the ''Alberta Oilers'' for their first season after their Calgary counterparts were unable to play. The Oilers were a middle of the road team, failing to win a single playoff series until their seventh, and final, season in the WHA. The 2021–22 Vegas Golden Knights season was the fifth season for the National Hockey League franchise that started playing in the 2017–18 season. 2021–22 Arizona Coyotes Season
The 2021–22 Arizona Coyotes season was the 43rd season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on June 22, 1979, the 26th season since the franchise relocated from Winnipeg following the 1995–96 NHL season, and the 50th overall season, including the World Hockey Association years. The Coyotes returned to the Central Division for the 2021–22 season. The franchise was previously part of this division from the time of its formation in 1993 (when the team was still based in Manitoba) through to the end of its second season in Arizona in 1998. The modern Winnipeg Jets are also in the Central, thus for the first time that city's original NHL franchise will be in the same division as its current team. The 2021–22 Anaheim Ducks season was the 29th season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 15, 1993. On November 9, 2021, former general manager Bob Murray was placed on administrative leave by the Ducks pending the results of an ongoing investigation. The investigation is reportedly focused on Murray's alleged history of verbal abuse to players and staff members. Assistant general manager Jeff Solomon was initially named as acting general manager but was then named interim general manager when Murray resigned on November 10. Ilya Gennadievich Konovalov (russian: Илья Геннадиевич Коновалов; born 13 July 1998) is a Russian professional ice hockey goaltender currently playing for HC Dynamo Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Playing career Konovalov made his professional debut in his native Russia, with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the Kontinental Hockey League. He won the Rookie of the Year award for the 2018–19 KHL season. He was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the third-round, 85th overall, of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Following his fourth season with Lokomotiv, Konovalov left at the conclusion of his contract and was signed to a two-year, entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers on 3 May 2021. The 2021–22 Winnipeg Jets season was the 23rd season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 25, 1997, and the 11th in Winnipeg, since the franchise relocated from Atlanta prior to the start of the 2011–12 NHL season. Mike Smith (born March 22, 1982) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Smith has previously played for the Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, and the Calgary Flames. Smith is the 11th goaltender in NHL history to score a goal, which he did in the 2013–14 season against the Detroit Red Wings. A two-time NHL All-Star (2017, 2018), he was named to the 2014 Canadian Olympic Hockey Team, winning a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics. The 2021–22 Seattle Kraken season was the inaugural season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise. They played their home games at Climate Pledge Arena. The Kraken played their first game on October 12, 2021, against the Vegas Golden Knights, which ended in a 4–3 loss, and played their first home game on October 23, 2021, against the Vancouver Canucks, a 4–2 loss.
