2021 New Mexico United Season
The 2021 New Mexico United season was the third season for New Mexico United in the USL Championship, the second-tier professional soccer league in the United States. This article covers the period from November 1, 2020, the day after the cancellation of the 2020 USL playoff final, to the conclusion of the 2021 USL playoff final. The USL Championship 2021 season began on April 24, and New Mexico United played its first competitive match of the season on May 1. Season in review Off-season and pre-season The club concluded the 2020 season with a loss to El Paso Locomotive FC in the Western Conference semifinal. They ended the regular season in 2nd place in Group C. Six players departed in November after the conclusion of play. Romeo Parkes returned to Sligo Rovers at the end of his loan. New Mexico United is an American professional soccer team based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Founded in 2018, the team currently plays in the USL Championship, the second division of American soccer. History Former teams The state of New Mexico gained its first professional soccer team in the 1990s, the New Mexico Chiles of the American Professional Soccer League and later the USISL. The team was runner-up for the league title in 1995 and attracted an average home attendance of 3,854, but was folded by its owners in 1996. The Chiles was replaced the following season by the Albuquerque Geckos, who entered USISL's Division 3 with new owners and played at a new soccer stadium shared with the collegiate New Mexico Lobos. The Geckos won the Division 3 championship and were promoted to the second division A-League in 1998, but struggled to win matches and were unable to pay players and creditors. 2020 USL Championship Playoffs
The 2020 USL Championship Playoffs was the post-season championship of the 2020 USL Championship. It was the tenth edition of the USL Championship Playoffs. The playoffs began on October 10, and originally scheduled to conclude with the USL Championship Final on November 1. The Final was then cancelled the day before because several Tampa Bay Rowdies players and staff tested positive for COVID-19. The championship would not be awarded. Sergio Rivas (born 3 October 1997) is a Mexican professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for USL Championship club New Mexico United. Career College Rivas spent his entire college career at Seattle University. He made a total of 85 appearances for the Redhawks and tallied 21 goals and 27 assists. While at college, Rivas played for Premier Development League sides Albuquerque Sol and Seattle Sounders FC U-23. Harry Swartz
Harrison "Harry" Swartz (born March 19, 1996) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for USL Championship club New Mexico United. Career Swartz is from Needham, Massachusetts. He played soccer at Needham High School, where he was a 2011 Bay State League First Team pick after breaking the school record for most points as a sophomore. In 2012, he was a silver medalist with the United States in the 2012 Pan American Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 2013, he was rated among the top 150 high school seniors by ''College Soccer News''. College and amateur Swartz spent five years playing college soccer at Northeastern University between 2014 and 2018, scoring 5 goals and tallying 5 assists in 71 appearances. Ilija Ilić
Ilija Ilić (born 26 April 1991) is a Serbian professional footballer who plays as a forward for USL League One club One Knoxville SC. Career Ilić began his career with the youth clubs of FK Čukarički and Red Star Belgrade, as well as a loan spell with FK Sopot during their 2010 and 2011 season. Ilić played college soccer in the United States with Young Harris College between 2011 and 2014. While at college, he also spent time with USL PDL club Ocala Stampede. After leaving college, he signed with USL club Louisville City on March 26, 2015. Ilić signed for USL Championship side Indy Eleven on 3 December 2018. Joris Ahlinvi (born 13 July 1995) is a French professional footballer who plays as a winger. Club career Valenciennes, Montpellier & Lége-Cap-Ferret Ahlinvi played with the Valenciennes academy and their second team in the CFA. David Estrada (born February 4, 1988) is a Mexican-American former soccer player who previously played for New Mexico United in the USL Championship. He played as either a forward, or more often for New Mexico United, as a right winger. Early life and amateur Estrada was born in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico and moved to California with his family at four months old. He was raised in Salinas, California and attended Alisal High School. The club was formed in 2018 by a group of Oakland natives, and began play in the National Independent Soccer Association in the fall of 2019.
