2020 Ghanaian General Election
General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2020. Incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was re-elected in the first round after securing a majority of the votes. Former President John Dramani Mahama says he will contest the results. The NPP lost its majority in the parliament, winning just as many seats as the opposition NDC, resulting in a hung parliament with a single independent (Andrew Asiamah Amoako) in the position of kingmaker. Electoral system The President of Ghana is elected using the two-round system, whilst the 275 members of Parliament are elected in single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post voting. Eligible voters must be Ghanaian citizens who are at least 18 years old, although those declared insane are disenfranchised. Nana Akufo-Addo
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ( ; born 29 March 1944) is a Ghanaian politician who has served as the president of Ghana since 7 January 2017. In 2020, he was re-elected for his second term, which will end on 6 January 2025. Akufo-Addo previously served as Attorney General from 2001 to 2003 and as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007 under the Kufuor-led administration. He was elected as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) chairman on 7 September 2020. He was re-elected for a second term as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Chairman on 2 February 2021. He ended his term on 3 July 2022. 2012 Ghanaian General Election
General elections were held in Ghana on Friday 7 December 2012 to elect a president and members of Parliament in 275 electoral constituencies. Owing to the breakdown of some biometric verification machines, some voters could not vote, and voting was extended to Saturday 8 December 2012. A run-off was scheduled for 28 December 2012 if no presidential candidate received an absolute majority of 50% plus one vote. Competing for presidency were incumbent president John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), his main challenger Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and six other candidates. Incumbent president John Mahama was declared winner of the presidential contest with 50.7% of the vote, just a few thousand votes over the threshold for avoiding a run-off election. Hassan Ayariga
Hassan Ayariga (born 4 September 1972) is a Ghanaian accountant, entrepreneur and politician. He is the founder of the All People's Congress (Ghana), All People's Congress (APC) and was the candidate of the People's National Convention (Ghana), People's National Convention for the 2012 Ghanaian presidential election, December 2012 presidential election. Early life and education Ayariga spent his childhood in Accra and Bawku, moving to Nigeria with his parents after the overthrow of the Hilla Limann, Limann administration. All People's Congress (Ghana)
The All People's Congress is a political party in Ghana formed by a break away from the People's National Convention (PNC). History It was founded in 2016 by Hassan Ayariga after leaving the People's National Convention, where he lost out to Edward Mahama as the presidential candidate for the December 2016 general election. The party's focus for the election campaign was jobs and the economy. Christian Kwabena Andrews who is popularly called ''Osofo Kyiri Abosom'' is a Ghanaian priest and politician. Politics Andrews launched the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) in March 2019. During the event, he described himself as the new Kwame Nkrumah and declared that the "spirit of Nkrumah is back". Ghana Union Movement
The Ghana Union Movement is a political party in Ghana. It was founded by Christian Kwabena Andrews who is also the founder of the Life Assembly Worship Center in Accra. During the launch of the party, he declared that he is "new Kwame Nkrumah" and also that the "spirit of Nkrumah is back." The party's agenda received some backing from Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Kwame Nkrumah. 2020 general election Andrews is one of the presidential candidates for the 2020 Ghanaian general election. The United Progressive Party is a political party in Ghana. Its founders were Akwasi Addai Odike and Dean Djokoto. It received its final certificate of registration from the Electoral Commission of Ghana in May 2015. The party contested the 2016 Ghanaian general election but failed to win a single seat. Prior to that election, Addai Odike had been suspended for breaching the party's constitution in appointing his own son as the acting General Secretary. Jerry Rawlings
Jerry John Rawlings (22 June 194712 November 2020) was a Ghanaian military officer and politician who led the country for a brief period in 1979, and then from 1981 to 2001. He led a military junta until 1992, and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana. Rawlings came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d'état in 1979. Prior to that, he led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government on 15 May 1979, just five weeks before scheduled democratic elections were due to take place.
