United Progressive Party (Ghana)
The United Progressive Party is a political party in Ghana. Its founders were Akwasi Addai Odike and Dean Djokoto. It received its final certificate of registration from the Electoral Commission of Ghana in May 2015. The party contested the 2016 Ghanaian general election but failed to win a single seat. Prior to that election, Addai Odike had been suspended for breaching the party's constitution in appointing his own son as the acting General Secretary. In March 2019, he was sacked from the party due to ongoing differences. Odike managed to become the party's nominee to stand for president in the 2020 Ghanaian general election. He complained during the week candidates were submitting their forms to the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) that various people including the EC and some New Patriotic Party officials were preventing him from registering. Akwasi Addai Odike
Akwasi Addai Odike is a Ghanaian businessman and politician. Early life and education Odike completed his secondary school education at Aduman Secondary school where he obtained the GCE Ordinary Level certificate. He later established as a business man running his own company, Odike Ventures in the Ashanti Region. Politics United Front Party Odike was the candidate of the United Front Party for the Ghanaian presidential election in December 2012. He placed eighth out of eight contestants with 0.08% of the votes cast. A feud developed within the UFP. The main protagonists were Odike and Nana Agyenim Boateng, chairman of the party. The Parliament of Ghana is the legislative body of the Government of Ghana. History Legislative representation in Ghana dates back to 1850, when the country was a British colony known as Gold Coast. The body, called the Legislative Council, was purely advisory as the Governor exercised all legislative and executive powers. Reforms were introduced in 1916 and 1925, although the governor's power remained extensive. Electoral Commission Of Ghana
The Electoral Commission of Ghana(EC) is the official body in Ghana responsible for all public elections. Made up of seven members, its independence is guaranteed by the 1992 Ghana constitution. The current commission was established by the Electoral Commission Act (Act 451) of 1993. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan was the first substantive chairman of the commission from 1993 to 2015. He was succeeded by Charlotte Osei as the first female chairman of the commission. 2016 Ghanaian General Election
General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2016 to elect a President and Members of Parliament. They had originally been scheduled for 7 November 2016, but the date was later rejected by Parliament. Former foreign minister Nana Akufo-Addo of the opposition New Patriotic Party was elected President on his third attempt, defeating incumbent President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress. The election results were announced on 9 December 2016 due to a delay of voting in two areas. At 19:51 local time, Mahama called Akufo-Addo to concede defeat. 2020 Ghanaian General Election
General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2020. Incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was re-elected in the first round after securing a majority of the votes. Former President John Dramani Mahama says he will contest the results. The NPP lost its majority in the parliament, winning just as many seats as the opposition NDC, resulting in a hung parliament with a single independent (Andrew Asiamah Amoako) in the position of kingmaker.
