2020 Cagua Fire
On 23 January 2020, a fire was started in the ''Agrícola del Lago'' reed bed in Cagua, Aragua state, Venezuela. Eleven people were confirmed to have died as a result of the fire, all but two being minors. Fire The fire started in Cagua on 23 January 2020, around 13:00 local time ( VET), at the ''Agrícola del Lago'' reed bed sugarcane plantation, located in a popular extraction zone in the La Carpiera sector, in Cagua, Aragua state. The fire was under control by 22:00 but the authorities maintained a watch on it. Firefighter units from Aragua, Cagua and the Forestry Unit, state civil defense officials, rescue groups, as well as park rangers and Corposalud Aragua participated in the operation. At 21:50 an official from the fire department declared that the incident was a "vegetation fire" that had started in the afternoon. Cagua () is a city of Venezuela, capital of the Sucre Municipality of Aragua State. Cagua is part of the metropolitan area of Maracay. History Cagua was established in 1620 as "Cagua La Vieja", a town of original Spaniards. Cagua was rebuilt in its current location in 1622 with the new name of "Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Cagua", which was changed to "San José de Cagua" during the 18th century. 2018 Valencia, Venezuela Fire
On March 28, 2018, a fire broke out during a prison riot in the cells at the Carabobo state police headquarters in Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela. The fire killed at least 68 people and injured scores of others. The fire is one of the deadliest incidents ever in a Venezuelan prison since the 1994 Sabaneta prison fire, in which more than 100 inmates died. Four prosecutors have been named to investigate the circumstances preceding the victims' deaths. The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights requested an investigation and reparations for the families of the fire victims. Background Violence and overcrowding are problems in Venezuela's prison system. Humberto Prado is a Venezuelan lawyer and activist. He is the founder and served as director of the Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons (OVP).
