2019 San Antonio FC Season
The 2019 San Antonio FC season was the club's fourth season of existence. Including the San Antonio Thunder of the original NASL and the former San Antonio Scorpions of the modern NASL, this was the 10th season of professional soccer in San Antonio. The club played in the USL Championship, the second division of the United States soccer league system, and participated in the U.S. Open Cup. San Antonio FC
San Antonio FC is a professional soccer club based in San Antonio, Texas. It competes in the USL Championship, the second-highest level of the United States soccer league system, as a member of the Western Conference. History San Antonio FC was awarded the thirty-first USL franchise on January 7, 2016. The establishment of the club, along with the concurrent purchase of Toyota Field by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, was part of a plan by local officials to obtain an expansion franchise in Major League Soccer. As a result, the San Antonio Scorpions franchise of the North American Soccer League was shut down. The first head coach in club history was former Elon University men's soccer coach and Orlando City SC Pro Academy Director, Darren Powell. San Antonio Thunder
The San Antonio Thunder were an American soccer team based in San Antonio, Texas. Founded in 1975 as a member of the North American Soccer League, the team played two seasons in San Antonio before the franchise rights were moved to Hawaii. The team was owned by Herman Warden "Ward" Lay, Jr., son of the founder of the Frito-Lay potato chip empire. Jonathan Joseph Viscosi (born March 18, 1991) is a Canadian soccer player who plays for Canadian Premier League club Valour FC. Early life Viscosi played youth soccer with Ottawa South United from 2004 to 2009. College career In 2009 and 2010, Viscosi attended the University of Rio Grande played his freshman and sophomore seasons with the Rio Grande Red Storm. Matt Cardone (born June 18, 1993) is an American former soccer player who played for San Antonio FC in the USL Championship. Early life and education Cardone was born in San Antonio, Texas. He played college soccer at Trinity University between 2011 and 2014, where he was twice named All-America. Professional career After a trial with Major League Soccer's Orlando City SC, Cardone signed with North American Soccer League side San Antonio Scorpions on April 17, 2015. STAR Soccer Complex
The South Texas Area Regional Soccer Complex is a 13 field soccer venue in San Antonio, Texas, United States. It is used primarily for youth club soccer and adult league soccer. It is located in the former Longhorn Quarry, adjacent to Toyota Field, and Morgan's Wonderland, and near Heroes Stadium. Toyota Field was originally owned and operated by S.O.A.R. Inc., a non-profit organization founded by Gordon Hartman. The complex was affiliated with the San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League, also owned by Hartman. On December 22, 2015, it was announced that Toyota Field and S.T.A.R. Soccer Complex were sold to the City of San Antonio and Bexar County. Ryan Roushandel
Ryan Massoud Roushandel (born November 11, 1985) is an American soccer player and coach. Youth career Roushandel started his collegiate career at Clemson University, going all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament as a redshirt freshman. After two years at Clemson, Roushandel opted to use his final three years of eligibility at the University of Central Florida. Club career After stints in Costa Rica with Brujas FC and Puerto Rico with Sevilla FC Puerto Rico, Roushandel returned to the US, where he coached with UCF Knights and Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels. Alen Marcina (born July 30, 1979) is a Canadian soccer coach and former player who is currently the head coach of USL Championship side San Antonio FC. He is a three-time champion with San Antonio Scorpions and Rayo OKC in the NASL. Club career Marcina played college soccer with Barry University, and with New Westminster Khalsa in the Pacific Coast Soccer League, before joining the Ottawa Wizards for the 2002–03 CPSL season, where he scored 9 goals in just 10 matches. United States Soccer League System
The United States soccer league system is a series of professional and amateur soccer leagues based, in whole or in part, in the United States. Sometimes called the American soccer pyramid, teams and leagues are not linked by the system of promotion and relegation typical in soccer elsewhere. Instead, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) defines professional leagues in three levels, called divisions, with all other leagues sanctioned by the USSF not having an official designated level or division. USL Championship
The USL Championship (USLC) is a professional men's soccer league in the United States that began its inaugural season in 2011. The USL is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer) as a Division II league since 2017, placing it under Major League Soccer (Division I) in the hierarchy. The USL is headquartered in Tampa, Florida.
