2019 Mississippi Elections
A general election was held in the U.S. state of Mississippi on November 5, 2019. All executive offices in the state were up for election. The primary election was held on August 6, 2019 and runoff elections were held on August 27, 2019. Although the Democratic Party (United States), Democrats came close to winning the governorship, they ultimately failed to do so. In addition, they lost the sole statewide office they have held since 1878: the Attorney general, Attorney General. Governor Lieutenant Governor Incumbent Republican Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves, who was reelected in 2015 with 60%, was ineligible to run for a third term due to term limits and successfully ran for governor instead. Mississippi () is a state in the Southeastern region of the United States, bordered to the north by Tennessee; to the east by Alabama; to the south by the Gulf of Mexico; to the southwest by Louisiana; and to the northwest by Arkansas. Mississippi Public Service Commission
The Mississippi Public Service Commission regulates telecommunications, electric, gas, water and sewer utilities in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The Commission is an elected body of three commissioners, with one commissioner elected by voters in each of the state's three Supreme Court districts. Commissioners are elected to four year terms in the general election of the same year that other state and county officials are chosen. The current commissioners are Brandon Presley (Northern District), Brent Bailey (Central District) and Dane Maxwell (Southern District). The commission is composed of two Republicans (Bailey and Maxwell) and one Democrat (Presley). The commission was established in 1884 as the Railroad Commission, which was then renamed the Public Service Commission in 1938. State Treasurer of Mississippi is a post created in 1817 when the state was admitted to the Union. Before the state was formed by splitting the Alabama Territory from the Mississippi Territory, an equivalent post was the Territorial Treasurer General, established in 1802. The elected office of the State Treasurer was created under Article 5, Section 134, of the Mississippi Constitution. The Attorney General of Mississippi is the chief legal officer of the state and serves as the state's lawyer. Only the Attorney General can bring or defend a lawsuit on behalf of the state. Jennifer A. Riley Collins is an American attorney and politician. Riley Collins is from Meridian, Mississippi. She graduated from Meridian High School and earned her bachelor's degree from Alcorn State University in 1987. She earned a master's degree in criminal justice administration in 1993 from University of Central Texas and a Juris Doctor in 1999 from the Mississippi College School of Law.
