Mississippi State Treasurer
State Treasurer of Mississippi is a post created in 1817 when the state was admitted to the Union. Before the state was formed by splitting the Alabama Territory from the Mississippi Territory, an equivalent post was the Territorial Treasurer General, established in 1802. The elected office of the State Treasurer was created under Article 5, Section 134, of the Mississippi Constitution. The Treasurer's responsibilities include the issuance of State debt, responsibility for the timely payment of principal and interest on the State's bond and note obligations, and receiving, disbursing and investing State funds. The State Treasurer also represents the Executive Branch on over a dozen boards and commissions. The treasurer's salary is $90,000 per year, but is set to increase to $120,000 annually in 2024. David McRae is an American politician from Mississippi. A member of the Republican Party, McRae has been Mississippi State Treasurer since 2020, having been elected in the 2019 election. Lynn Fitch
Lynn Fitch (born October 5, 1961) is an American lawyer, politician, and the 40th Mississippi Attorney General. She is the first woman to serve in the role and the first Republican since 1878. Previously, she was the 54th State Treasurer of Mississippi from 2012 to 2020. Edwin Lloyd Pittman (born January 2, 1935) is an American jurist and politician who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Mississippi from 1989 to 2001 and chief justice from 2001 to 2004. He also served as the State's Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Treasurer. Pittman reached the rank of Brigadier General in the Mississippi National Guard. William Forrest Winter (February 21, 1923 – December 18, 2020) was an American attorney and politician who served as Governor of Mississippi from 1980 to 1984. A member of the Democratic Party, he also served as Lieutenant Governor, State Treasurer, State Tax Collector, and in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Edythe Evelyn Gandy (September 4, 1920 – December 23, 2007) was an American attorney and politician who served as Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi from 1976 to 1980. A Democrat who held several public offices throughout her career, she was the first woman elected to a statewide constitutional office in Mississippi. The Constitution of Mississippi is the primary organizing law for the U.S. state of Mississippi delineating the duties, powers, structures, and functions of the state government. Mississippi's original constitution was adopted at a constitutional convention held at Washington, Mississippi in advance of the western portion of the territory's admission to the Union in 1817. The current state constitution was adopted in 1890 following the reconstruction period. Richard Griffith (January 11, 1814 – June 29, 1862) was a Brigadier General (CSA), brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Savage's Station during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign.
