2018 Philippine Open Short Track Championships
The Philippine Open Short Track Championships is the national short track speed skating competition in the Philippines. It is organized by the Philippine Skating Union. The first edition will be held on September 27, 2018, at the SM Megamall Ice Skating Rink in Mandaluyong. The performance of the more than 35 athletes which will compete in the inaugural edition of the championships will be used as basis for the selection of the Philippines' representatives in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in short track speed skating. 500-meter, 1000-meter, 1,500-meter and relay will be contested for both male and female competitors. India also fielded speed skaters in this edition. Short-track speed skating is a form of competitive ice skating, ice speed skating. In competitions, multiple skaters (typically between four and six) skate on an oval ice track with a length of . Philippine Skating Union
The Philippine Skating Union (PhSU) is the sports governing body of the Philippines for figure skating and short track speedskating. PhSU was granted provisional membership on June 13, 2004 by the International Skating Union. Full membership was granted upon the completion of an Olympic sized skating rink at the SM Mall of Asia. It is a National Sports Association duly recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee. SM Megamall, simply known as Megamall, is the third largest shopping mall in the Philippines and the thirteenth largest in the world that is developed and operated by SM Prime Holdings. Kathryn Victory Magno (born March 18, 1990) is an American-born Filipina short track speed skater and former figure skater. Magno is the first person to win a medal in speed skating for the Philippines in an international competition outside the country. Early life Magno was born to Filipino parents in San Jose, California, United States on March 18, 1990. Sporting career Magno started her sporting career as a figure skater representing the Philippines. She was first introduced to the sport when she was five years old. Among the competitions she entered is the 2009 Coupe Internationale de Nice. She made a switch to short track speed skating in 2014, coming from a two year break to focus on her studies.
