2017 Westmeath Senior Football Championship
The 2017 Westmeath Senior Football Championship is the 113th edition of the Westmeath GAA's premier club Gaelic football tournament for senior graded teams in County Westmeath, Ireland. The tournament consists of 12 teams, with the winner going on to represent Westmeath in the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship. The championship starts with a group stage and then progresses to a knock out stage. St. Loman's Mullingar were the defending champions after they defeated Tyrrellspass in the previous years final to complete a "2-in-a-row" of titles. This was Rosemount's return to the senior grade after a 17-year exodus when claiming the 2016 Westmeath Intermediate Football Championship title. Westmeath Senior Football Championship
The Westmeath Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition organised by Westmeath GAA between the top Gaelic football clubs in County Westmeath. The winner of the Westmeath Championship qualifies to represent the county in the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship, the winner of which progresses to the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. The current champions are St Loman's, winning their 8th title in 2020. Athlone GAA is the Gaelic football club in the town of Athlone in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. The local hurling club is calleSouthern Gaels Athlone is Westmeath GAA's most successful football club. Club history The club was founded in 1885 by Irish National League members, bringing GAA to Athlone. Athlone GAA are Westmeath's most successful club with 20 senior titles, the last of which was 1998. Cusack Park (' in Irish language, Irish), known for sponsorship reasons as TEG Cusack Park, is a Gaelic Athletic Association, GAA stadium in Mullingar, County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It is the main grounds of Westmeath GAA's Gaelic football and hurling teams. The ground, named after GAA founder Michael Cusack (Gaelic Athletic Association), Michael Cusack, was opened in 1933 and had a capacity of 15,000. Maryland GAA
Maryland GAA is a Gaelic football club based in Drumraney, County Westmeath, Ireland. It was founded in 1957. Maryland play in the Westmeath Intermediate Football Championship and have been winners on 2 occasions, 1980 and 2008. Maryland GAA were winners of the Celebrity Bainisteoir (season 1) in 2008 under the guidance of radio and television presenter Marty Whelan who replaced Fianna Fáil TD Mary O'Rourke as bainisteoir during the series. The club is located in The Downs, a community east of Mullingar. Moate
Moate (; ) is a town in County Westmeath, Ireland. The name ''An Móta'' is derived from the term motte-and-bailey, as the Normans built an example of this type of fortification here. The earthwork is still visible behind the buildings on the main street. The town later became an important marketplace and Quaker village. It has made the town much more wealthy. There are several extant examples of Quaker houses on the main street, which itself is typical of an Irish marketplace. Location Moate is on the Cloghatanny River, also known as the Moate Stream, which is a tributary of the River Brosna. The confluence between the Cloghatanny and Brosna is to the southeast of Moate. Garrycastle GAA
Garrycastle is a Gaelic football club from the town of Athlone in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. The club was founded in 1981 after GAA fans in the area saw the need for a second club in Athlone to cater for the growing population of the town. They won their first Westmeath senior football championship in 2001, and their first Leinster club football title in 2011 after a last-minute free from second-half substitute Conor Cosgrove. They are the first and only Westmeath club to win the title. In 2004, Dessie Dolan was the first player from the club to be awarded an All Star. Dessie received an award for Westmeath footballer of the year for 2015 after his Man of the Match performance against Meath in the Leinster Championship. Leinster Senior Club Football Championship
The Leinster Senior Club Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football tournament played on a knockout basis between the senior club championship winners of the competing counties in Leinster. The current holders of the Leinster title are Ballyboden St. Enda's from Dublin. Offaly side Gracefield were the first winners of the Leinster senior club football championship in the 1970–71 season. The most successful clubs are St. Vincent's from Dublin and Portlaoise from Laois, who have won the Leinster championship on seven occasions. Carlow club Éire Óg won 5 championships in 7 years in the 1990s. Dublin clubs have won the Leinster championship twenty one times, which is more than double any other county. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag.
