2017 Biathlon World Championships
The 49th Biathlon World Championships was held from 9 to 19 February 2017 in Hochfilzen, Austria. There were a total of 11 competitions: sprint, pursuit, individual, mass start, and relay races for men and women, and mixed relay. All the events during this championships also count for the Biathlon World Cup season. Host selection The second candidate city was Östersund, Sweden. Hochfilzen was selected as the host city on September 2 2012 during the X IBU Congress in Merano, Italy (27 to 20 votes). This will be fourth time when World Championships will be held in Hochfilzen; the city had previously hosted the event in 1978, 1998 and 2005. Schedule ''All times are local (UTC+1).'' Hochfilzen
Hochfilzen is a town and municipality in the Kitzbühel district of the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is located in the Pillersee valley 5 km east of Fieberbrunn. Population was 1,147 in 2016. It is a popular winter sports resort, especially for cross-country skiing. In 2017 (9 to 19 February) it hosted the Biathlon World Championships, as it also did in 2005, 1998 and 1978, and it is a regular venue in the annual IBU World Cup series. Training area In 1875 Hochfilzen was joined to the railway network and soon afterwards a military training area was established here. Martin Fourcade
Martin Fourcade (; born 14 September 1988) is a French biathlete and sous-lieutenant. He is a five-time Olympic champion, a thirteen-time World Champion and a seven-time winner of the Overall World Cup. As of February 2018, he is the most successful French Olympian of all time. Fourcade is the all-time biathlon record holder of overall World Cup titles with seven big crystal globes and he's also the all-time record holder of the most consecutive Major Championships titles with at least one non-team gold medal in every major championship from 2011-2018. Alexey Anatolyevich Volkov (russian: Алексей Анатольевич Волков, born 5 April 1988) is a Russian former biathlete. Career He competed at the Biathlon World Championships 2012 in Ruhpolding, and at the Biathlon World Championships 2013 in Nove Mesto na Morave. Ondřej Moravec (; born 9 June 1984) is a former Czech biathlete. Life and career Moravec represented the Czech Republic at the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018. At the 2014 Winter Olympics, he won silver medals in both the pursuit and the mixed relay (together with Jaroslav Soukup, Veronika Vítková and Gabriela Soukalová) and a bronze medal in the mass start. Lowell Bailey
Lowell Bailey (born July 15, 1981 in Siler City, North Carolina) is an American biathlon coach and retired biathlete who competed from 2001 until 2018. Career His first World Cup podium was a 2nd place (following a disqualification) in the second sprint event at Kontiolahti (FIN) in 2014., and his first World Cup victory came in the 20 km event at the 2017 Biathlon World Championships in Hochfilzen, Austria. He thus became the first biathlon world champion from the United States, as well as the oldest individual gold medalist at the World Championships in biathlon history, at 35 years and 216 days. Ole Einar Bjørndalen () (born 27 January 1974) is a retired Norwegian professional Biathlon, biathlete and coach, often referred to by the nickname, the "King of Biathlon". Simon Eder
Simon Eder (born 23 February 1983) is an Austrian biathlete. Career His first World Cup win was in the Khanty-Mansiysk mass-start race on 29 March 2009. Eder represented Austria at the 2010 Winter Olympics and in 2014 Winter Olympics. He won 2 medals: silver in the Men's relay in 2010, and a bronze in Men's relay in 2014. Both of the relays together with Daniel Mesotitsch, Dominik Landertinger and Christoph Sumann. Marie Dorin Habert (born 19 June 1986) is a retired French biathlete. Career She became junior world champion in relay (2004 and 2005). She represented France at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She was also on the bronze medal-winning French relay team at the Biathlon World Championships 2009. Dorin won a bronze in the women's 7.5 km sprint on 13 February 2010 and a silver in the relay. She won her first individual world cup victory at the 2015 world championships in Kontiolahti, Finland, in the sprint event, which was her first World Champion title as well. The next day she won the world championships pursuit, making it her second individual world cup victory and second gold medal in the world championships.
